The top group alone was about 34% higher but not statistically significant. Cancer was self-reported and diet was short-term recall—observational association, not a trial.

For men, demoting sodas, processed meats, packaged snacks, and ready meals from staple calories is closer to this evidence than debating a single additive; the study does not prove that cutting UPFs prevents cancer, but it lines up with metabolic and cardiovascular findings.


2. Nature: East China Normal University team tests an oral “sense-and-respond” glucose-lowering probiotic in mice and monkeys (Nutrition / Mechanism)

Summary:

Hai-Feng Ye’s group published August 12 in Nature (DOI: 10.1038/s41586-026-10909-6); Chinese science media followed on August 14. They engineered E. coli Nissle 1917 into GIFT, an oral glucose-sensing living drug that temporarily resides in the gut, expresses GLP-1 when glucose exceeds a threshold, and down-regulates afterward. Diabetic mice showed improvements in glycemia, lipids, and some complication markers with repeated dosing; spontaneously diabetic cynomolgus monkeys had GLP-1/insulin rises and glucose lowering lasting up to about 3 days after one dose, and better glycemic stability over about 5 weeks of dosing every 3 days without clear CBC or liver/kidney lab flags. Animal and non-human primate work—not a human trial.

This is a lab living-drug platform, not supermarket yogurt; people with diagnosed diabetes should stay on prescribed GLP-1 or insulin rather than imitating the protocol with commercial ferments.


3. Cambridge perspective paper: a health–environment–access score of 20 protein foods ranks tofu first and cheddar last (Nutrition)

Summary:

Chris Macdonald of the University of Cambridge introduced the BPI Score in Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems (DOI: 10.3389/fsufs.2026.1677796); BBC Science Focus ranked the foods on August 14. Use tofu, beans, and lentils as default protein more often; chicken breast and tuna can stay in the middle of the list—you need not drop eggs for a composite score, but treating cheddar as a primary protein raises both saturated fat and environmental cost.


4. Pharmaceuticals review: precision nutrition may improve GLP-1 effectiveness and tolerability, but joint prospective trials remain scarce (Nutrition)

Antonio Giordano of the Sbarro Health Research Organization and colleagues published a narrative review in Pharmaceuticals (MDPI volume/issue at the link below); Nutrition Insight summarized it. 5. PNAS: Yaghnob kefir yeasts show efficient galactose use, helping explain low lactose in fermented milk (Mechanism)

Summary:

Duccio Cavalieri’s University of Florence team published in PNAS (DOI: 10.1073/pnas.2537942123); Florence media reported on August 14. They sequenced Saccharomyces cerevisiae from traditional goat-milk ferments and compared them with more than 1,000 strains from wine, grapes, and the human gut. Yaghnob yeasts sit near the root of dairy-adapted lineages and metabolize galactose efficiently, competing with lactobacilli for lactose-hydrolysis products—a plausible explanation for lower lactose in live ferments and for microbiota interactions. Genomics and microbe–microbe ecology, not a clinical trial of kefir as therapy.

People with lactose intolerance can trial a properly live fermented dairy as a tolerance test; this paper does not replace lactase or medical evaluation, and it is not a prescription to treat inflammation with trendy kefir.


II. Exercise and Training Science

6. Cell Reports Medicine: six 30-second all-out sprints immediately shifted about a quarter of measured plasma proteins, far more than 90 minutes of moderate cycling (Training)

Summary:

Paul Cohen, Luke Olsen, and colleagues at Rockefeller University published August 13 in Cell Reports Medicine (DOI: 10.1016/j.xcrm.2026.102988); Korean coverage recirculated on August 14. They compared sprint intervals (six 30-second all-out bouts with about 4 minutes rest; about 3 minutes of work) with 90 minutes of moderate continuous cycling and with running. Sprints immediately changed about a quarter of measured proteins (reports cite about 714 proteins, more than 98% rising); moderate cycling changed under 0.25%. Sprints also shifted more than 200 metabolites, with ectodomain shedding implicated. Against UK Biobank data on more than 53,000 people, 32 of 33 proteins tied to lower obesity/type 2 diabetes risk moved after sprints versus three after moderate exercise. Participants were mainly young healthy men, with a small sprint subsample—an acute molecular study, not a clinical-endpoint RCT.

Trained adults can add a few near-maximal short intervals to the week for high-intensity stimulus; people who are sedentary or have cardiovascular or joint risk should not start with Wingate-style sprints—this proteomics snapshot does not cancel the long-term benefits of moderate aerobic work.


7. Meta-analysis: high-intensity, change-of-direction training raised osteocalcin; walking and conventional lifting were weaker on bone-turnover markers (Training)

Summary:

Viktória Barna, Nóra Sydó, and colleagues at Semmelweis University pooled 24 RCTs and 1,238 healthy adults in Sports Medicine - Open (DOI: 10.1186/s40798-026-00986-2). They used blood markers such as osteocalcin rather than waiting for BMD. High-intensity training significantly increased osteocalcin (MD = 6.88; 95% CI 0.37–13.38); endurance training did not change osteocalcin but lowered BMI; power and mixed training did not significantly change osteocalcin. Recreational football and handball, with explosive efforts, cuts, and turns, were linked to about 45%–46% higher bone-formation markers. GRADE certainty for osteocalcin after high-intensity training was moderate to low; marker shifts precede density and are not the same as fracture prevention.

Bone-protective training should not be walking or machine circuits alone; adding jumps, cutting, or small-sided games when safe tracks this marker evidence better than adding another low-impact session.


III. Public Health and Disease Prevention

8. WHO restates combination shots and existing schedules: splitting MMR or delaying doses is not safer; a Wisconsin measles cluster is mostly unvaccinated (Public health)

Summary:

IV. Sleep and Mental Health

9. Meta-analysis of 11 RCTs: non-drug sleep–circadian programs reduced depression and insomnia in adults with mental disorders (Sleep)

Summary:

A Frontiers in Psychiatry systematic review searched through April 12, 2026, and included 11 RCTs in depression, bipolar disorder, severe mental illness, ADHD, and mixed psychiatric samples. Combined sleep–circadian interventions versus controls: depressive symptoms SMD = −0.51 (95% CI −0.72 to −0.30); treatment response RR = 1.68 (1.25–2.27); insomnia severity MD = −5.23 (−6.41 to −4.04); sleep quality SMD = −0.92, with gains in sleep-related and global function. Remission rested on only two trials. Certainty ranged from very low to moderate, and some outcomes had few studies—not a replacement for psychiatric medication.

When depression and insomnia travel together, treat a fixed wake time, morning light, time-in-bed restriction, and CBT-I-style routines as first-line behavior, alongside medication, rather than only adding sleep drugs or waiting for mood to self-correct.


V. Evidence and Clarification

10. FDA proposes mandatory GRAS notification to close a voluntary additive loophole; the rule is still out for comment (Food safety)

11. Meta-analysis of 13 RCTs: neuromuscular training cut athlete ankle-injury incidence by about 55% (Sports medicine)
