Commentary:
Day-to-day, cut hidden sodium in takeout and packaged foods and make potassium a plate staple via vegetables, legumes, or potatoes with skin—not a supplement experiment if you have kidney disease or take potassium-sparing drugs.
2. CLHLS cross-section: higher Chinese MIND (cMIND) scores track with less IADL disability in older adults (Nutrition)
Summary:
Fu and colleagues analyzed 9,511 adults aged 65 and older in the 2018 Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, published August 9, 2026, in Aging Clinical and Experimental Research. cMIND scores were grouped in quartiles (Q1: 0–4 to Q4: ≥6.5). About 23.74% had BADL disability and 57.95% IADL disability. Versus Q1, Q2 had lower odds of BADL disability (OR about 0.821, 95% CI 0.676–0.999); Q2–Q4 had lower IADL disability than Q1. Cross-sectional association with mixed subgroup results—not proof that changing diet restores independence.

For older adults, a brain-health pattern—leafy greens, berries, nuts, whole grains, less fried food—is closer to this evidence than chasing a single superfood or supplement.
II. Exercise and Training Science
3. University of Queensland HABITAT cohort: meeting both aerobic and strength guidelines tracked with about 50% lower type 2 diabetes risk (Training)
Summary:
Pham, Mielke and colleagues reported HABITAT findings in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport (DOI: 10.1016/j.jsams.2026.07.016). They followed more than 8,000 Brisbane adults aged 40–64 for nine years (five surveys, 2007–2016). Versus people meeting neither guideline, those who consistently met both aerobic and muscle-strengthening recommendations had about 50% lower type 2 diabetes risk, about 24% lower hypertension, and about 23% lower cancer. About half met the aerobic bar, only about 24% met both, and about 30% met neither. UQ posted August 11; outlets including Welltica followed on August 15. Observational—confounding by diet and sleep is possible, and it does not prove strength training alone prevents cancer.

Commentary:
If you already walk or cycle, adding two weekly days of squats, push-ups, bands, or machines is closer to this association than endlessly extending cardio; it is not a drug substitute, but it should be a default, not optional.
4. Diabetologia secondary analysis: concurrent training on a weight-loss diet improved post-exercise ceramide clearance (Training)
Summary:
In a prior randomized trial, adults with overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes were assigned 12 weeks of a palaeolithic-type diet (PD) or PD plus supervised concurrent training three times weekly. A lipidomics secondary analysis published August 5 included 21 participants with complete samples before and after an exercise test and after 30 minutes of recovery. Glycemic handling during the test improved in both groups, but only PD+E improved cardiometabolic fitness. Resting triacylglycerols fell in both; PD+E additionally lowered very-long-chain ceramides (>C22). Sphingomyelins and ceramides rose during exercise in both groups, but only the training arm cleared them better in recovery, a pattern linked to fat oxidation during exercise. People losing weight with diabetes should not rely on eating less alone: three weekly sessions that combine cardio and resistance are the piece this analysis associates with better lipid handling after a workout—the palaeo menu itself is not mandatory.
5. Multi-omics: molecular clocks of disuse atrophy and recovery lifting are mostly time-driven, not training-history-driven (Training)
Summary:
Michel and colleagues published August 5, 2026, in Skeletal Muscle. In a subset of previously compared resistance-trained versus untrained young adults (n = 8 each), vastus lateralis biopsies at baseline, after 2 weeks of immobilization, and after 8 weeks of recovery resistance training were profiled for transcriptome, miRNA, and proteome. Most differential features were time-driven rather than training-status-driven. The transcriptome responded most to disuse (PRE-to-DIS: 2,047 DE mRNAs; fewer miRNA and protein changes); recovery training remodeled transcriptome and proteome together (415 differentially abundant proteins reported). Disuse enriched proteostasis and DNA repair; recovery RT enriched striated-muscle contraction and transcription/rRNA pathways. Small sample, young adults only.

After surgery or prolonged sitting, the molecular “off switch” hits novices and veterans quickly; restarting safe resistance work early matters more than assuming prior gym years will spare you.
6. 18-month multicomponent training: BMD and strength rose in young men with normal bone, but so did whole-body fat (Training)
Summary:
Wei and colleagues reported a single-arm prospective study on August 8 in BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders: 60 healthy young men (mean age about 18.7 years; baseline BMD Z-score about −0.05) completed 18 months of supervised aerobic, resistance, flexibility, and impact/power training. Whole-body DXA showed bone-density gains and regional lean mass increases; isokinetic strength at 60°/s improved at shoulder, wrist, and knee in a 15-person subgroup. Whole-body fat mass, body-fat percentage, and several central-adiposity indices also rose. Authors call for nutrition monitoring and randomized trials.

“Training automatically leans you out” failed in this young-male sample: bone and strength can improve while waist measures worsen if energy intake is unmanaged—log food, don’t only add sessions.
III. Public Health and Disease Prevention
7. CDC update: 13,895 lab-confirmed domestically acquired cyclosporiasis cases this season, 740 hospitalizations, 2 deaths (Public health / Food safety)

CDC surveillance updated August 11: from May 1 through August 10, 2026, 13,895 laboratory-confirmed U.S.-acquired cyclosporiasis cases (no international travel in the 14 days before illness), at least 740 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths, reported from 47 states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico; median onset July 7; median age 45; about 57% female. For comparison, 1,180 U.S. cases were reported May 1–August 31, 2025. At least 10,455 additional cases are unconfirmed or still under review (many from Michigan). The August 13 outbreak page remains open: Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled iceberg lettuce from central Mexico on July 17; best-by dates have passed. CDC is also investigating unrelated clusters. Alcohol-based sanitizer does not reliably inactivate oocysts; cooking to about 70°C (158°F) can. Reporting lag is about six weeks.

Commentary:
Summer salads are not risk-free after a rinse: wash under running water, cook produce for high-risk people, and ask for Cyclospora testing if watery diarrhea lasts—routine stool panels often miss it.
8. Current Hypertension Reports: 2025 AHA/ACC guide recap—PREVENT risk, aldosteronism screening, and lifestyle as treatment (Guidelines)
Summary:
Current Hypertension Reports reviewed the 2025 AHA/ACC adult high-blood-pressure guideline: PREVENT replaces older pooled cohort equations and folds in kidney function, statin use, and social drivers of health; screening for primary aldosteronism expands to all stage 2 or resistant hypertension regardless of potassium (the condition is estimated in about 5%–10% of hypertension and up to about 20% of resistant cases, yet screening among eligible patients has been reported below 2%); renal denervation is an adjunct for selected patients. Office hypertension should not end at a single prescription: confirm with a validated home cuff, ask about urine albumin and aldosterone screening when indicated, and treat sodium, potassium-rich foods, activity, and weight as co-equal with pills.
IV. Sleep and Mental Health
9. Seven-day intensive tracking: better-than-usual subjective sleep predicted lower next-day stress; objective metrics hinged on how “night” was defined (Sleep)

Bamert and colleagues published August 12 in Scientific Reports: 106 young adults (mean age about 22.7; about 85.8% female) reported momentary and daily stress and sleep quality for 7 days while wearables captured HRV-derived sleep metrics (742 person-days). Bayesian cross-lagged multilevel models found that, within persons, better-than-usual subjective sleep predicted lower next-day perceived stress; between persons, higher stress related to worse subjective sleep and longer sleep-onset latency. Objective associations flipped with how nocturnal windows were defined (self-report, accelerometry, or fixed clocks), with inconsistent sleep-onset-latency findings. Young, mostly female sample—limited generalizability.

Treat last night’s sleep quality as a next-day stress dial: a stable bedtime and less midnight scrolling sit closer to what this design supports than buying a watch that claims precise stage scoring.
10. UK Biobank: higher brain glymphatic (DTI-ALPS) index associated with lower mortality and neurodegenerative risk (Sleep / Mechanism)

Zhang and colleagues published August 14 in Translational Psychiatry: 34,268 UK Biobank participants with MRI since August 2014; left, right, and average DTI-ALPS indices as a glymphatic proxy. Incident death and disease were tracked to December 2021. Higher ALPS associated with lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.85, 95% CI 0.78–0.93), CVD-specific death (HR 0.77, 0.63–0.93), and neurodegenerative death (HR 0.56, 0.37–0.84), plus lower incident CVD (HR 0.92) and neurodegenerative disease (HR 0.68). An imaging proxy is not a home “brain-wash” prescription.

This is a mechanistic cohort signal: protecting vessels and keeping sleep and blood pressure in range is closer to what the evidence can support than buying products marketed to “boost lymph.”
V. Evidence and Clarification
11. Supplement clarification: creatine’s adjunct signal for depression is weak—not an “mood drug” (Evidence)
Summary:
Psychology Today on August 14 reviewed a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 trials (1,093 participants): creatine associated with lower depression scores, but the average gap was about 2.2 points on the 17-item Hamilton scale, below a commonly cited 3-point minimal important difference, with very-low certainty and high heterogeneity. A randomized trial combining creatine with CBT was described as hypothesis-generating. A 2024 EFSA assessment found evidence insufficient to claim a cause-and-effect link with cognition.
