1. ISS Spacewalk on Aug. 18 to Replace Space-to-Ground Antenna; Adenot to Be First French Woman on EVA (Human Spaceflight)

NASA updated coverage for U.S. spacewalk 97 on August 18, 2026: NASA astronaut Anil Menon and ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot will exit the Quest airlock to remove a failed Space-to-Ground antenna, stow it on an external platform, and install a spare on the Z1 truss. 2. ESA Releases Aug. 12 Totality from Space: Proba-3 Artificial Eclipse Meets the Moon’s Shadow (Sun–Earth)

Summary:

ESA posted on August 14 that hours before the August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse over parts of Europe, the Proba-3 pair—about 60,000 km above Earth and 150 m apart—used the Occulter as an artificial Moon for the 65th ASPIICS corona image; the real Moon then crossed the field, creating a double eclipse. BBC Sky at Night reported the same day that geostationary imager MTG-I1 (about 36,000 km up) captured the lunar shadow sweeping Greenland, Iceland, and a sliver of northeastern Spain and Portugal; totality was visible about 20:26–20:34 CEST over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and a small part of northern Portugal. 3. Whole-Brain Millisecond Voltage Imaging: Larval Zebrafish Scanned at 200.8 Hz (Neuroscience)

Summary:

Zeguan Wang, Jie Zhang, and Ed Boyden’s MIT group report in Nature Methods on August 14 a remote-refocusing light-sheet microscope that voltage-images larval zebrafish brains expressing Positron2-Kv at 200.8 Hz (about once every 5 ms), covering ~85% of brain volume. Across four fish they segmented about 17,000–26,000 neuronal ROIs and retained about 13,000–19,000 after excluding blood-flow artifacts—up to roughly one quarter of the ~78,000 neurons estimated in a 7-dpf fish. Visually evoked sequences mapped across the optic tectum; stimulus-independent bursts mapped in cerebellum and medulla. MIT News the same day stressed that calcium imaging is too slow to catch single spikes.

Calcium is a proxy; voltage is the computation—whole-brain voltage imaging makes “how the network fires together” an observation, not an inference.


4. EMA Validates Pfizer/Valneva Lyme Vaccine Marketing Application (Vaccines)

Summary:

Pfizer and Valneva announced on August 14 that the European Medicines Agency has validated the Marketing Authorization Application for PF-07307405, a 6-valent outer surface protein A (OspA) Lyme disease vaccine candidate, and will begin assessment. The filing rests on Phase 3 VALOR (NCT05477524): 9,437 participants aged 5 years and older in high-incidence U.S., Canadian, and European sites were randomized 1:1 to vaccine or saline at months 0, 2, and 5–9 plus a fourth dose one year later. 5. Bioresorbable Triboelectric Implants Readable by Handheld Light (Implantable Electronics)

Summary:

Meng and colleagues at Yonsei University, with Donghua University, Samsung Medical Center, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, report in Nature Nanotechnology on August 14 a battery-free, bioresorbable triboelectric implant using machine-learning-selected nanoscale iridium(III) complexes for both phosphorescent readout and charge generation. Device outlines are visible to the unaided eye under handheld illumination; ultrasound at 0.5 W cm⁻² yields up to about 3.6 Vpp. In mice, optical readouts tracked position, morphology, and damage, correlated defects with loss of electrical output, and followed integrity and resorption over 38 weeks.

6. Giant-Virus Genome Catalogue Expands to 8,508 Species-Level Representatives (Viromics)

Summary:

Yumary M. Vasquez and colleagues published GVMAGs V2 in Nature Microbiology on August 13: 18,727 giant-virus metagenome-assembled genomes from public assemblies and other sources, dereplicated at 95% ANI into 8,508 species-level representatives—about a sixfold increase over prior species-level frameworks. Phylogenomics supports 712 previously undescribed genera, 13 new families, and a proposed order Mycodnavirales. Improved gene calling covered more than 1,300 genomes. Mining found putative endogenous viral elements in algae, fungi, and parasitic protists; Algavirales genomes are enriched for pollutant-degradation genes, with widespread biosynthetic clusters resembling antimicrobial and antibiotic-resistance functions.

7. Cost of Capital Inflates LMIC Renewables: Financing Can Be Nearly 80% of LCOE (Energy Finance)

Summary:

Luke Hatton, Gbemi Oluleye, Malte Jansen and colleagues at Imperial College London report in Nature Communications on August 13 that renewable projects in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) can have more than 20 times the mitigation potential per project versus high-income countries, yet high capital costs add on average about US$26/MWh (solar) and US$24/MWh (onshore wind) to LCOE relative to high-income financing terms. Financing can account for up to 78% of LCOE in LMICs versus about 37–39% in high-income countries. Under a pathway consistent with tripling global renewable capacity by 2030, that implies extra annual costs of about US$245 billion (solar) and US$329 billion (wind).

8. Low-Loading Nickel Grows [Ni1O1Ni4] Motifs In Situ for Methane Partial Oxidation (Catalysis)

Tan and colleagues report in Nature Catalysis on August 14 that partial oxidation of methane (POM) need not rely on ~10 wt% metallic nickel nanoparticles. They observe in situ [Ni1O1Ni4] motifs on NiO, with one Ni atom on an oxygen bridging four Ni atoms. A Ni/Al2O3-ME catalyst made by depositing preformed Ni nanoparticles at 0.8 wt% Ni achieved 92.0% CH4 conversion and 87.0% CO/H2 selectivity at 650 °C, with a stable H2/CO ratio of 2.0. Operando spectroscopy and microscopy show metallic Ni oxidizing to NiO during POM; high-resolution imaging plus DFT indicate the motif on NiO(100) lowers the C–H activation barrier to 12.5 kcal mol⁻¹.

9. STAR Tracks Baryon Number: Evidence Favors a Y-Shaped Gluon Junction in the Proton (Particle Physics)

Summary:

The University of Science and Technology of China, with Kent State University, Brookhaven National Laboratory and the STAR Collaboration, measured net baryon versus net charge transport. The paper Tracking the baryon number with nuclear collisions appeared in Science in the early hours of August 14 Beijing time. Isobar ruthenium–zirconium collisions and photon–gold interactions show baryon number is stopped and transported to mid-rapidity more readily than electric charge, disagreeing with a naive picture in which valence quarks each carry baryon number 1/3 and matching a Y-shaped gluon “baryon junction” proposed in the 1970s and developed by Kharzeev in 1996. 10. Double Chooz Detects Antineutrino Afterglow from a Shutdown Reactor (Nuclear & Particle Physics)

Anthony Onillon and Thierry Lasserre of the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik lead the Double Chooz result in Physical Review Letters: the first measurement of antineutrinos from spent nuclear fuel after shutdown. 11. Bilayer-Graphene Antidot as a Fractional Coulombmeter: Direct Fractional Quantum Hall Charge (Condensed Matter)
