Today's auto and mobility briefing for October 6, 2026, with summaries, links, and commentary.

I. Electric Vehicles and Investment

1. Kenya signs a proposed $3 billion green-mobility memorandum with Endelevu, and Ruto names Geely (Policy / Kenya)

Summary:

The Presidential Communication Service and The Star reported on October 6 that President William Ruto witnessed a memorandum of understanding on electric-vehicle manufacturing between the Government of Kenya and Endelevu Enterprise Corporation at State House, Nairobi. Ruto said the memorandum sets a framework for an integrated green-mobility ecosystem, with a proposed investment of $3 billion, and called it one of the largest electric-mobility commitments in the region. In his remarks he addressed Endelevu and Geely as partners. The proposal includes an assembly plant for 50,000 four-wheel vehicles a year, a second plant for 100,000 two-wheelers and light-mobility vehicles a year, 1,000 solar-powered charging hubs, and a digital platform to manage up to 100,000 green vehicles. He put the employment figure at about 2,000 direct jobs, more than 20,000 indirect jobs among suppliers, logistics firms, and service providers, and up to 80,000 further opportunities in fleet management, operations, and services. He also said a memorandum is a framework, not the finish line, and that the project still has to move from signature to definitive agreements, groundbreaking, and production.

Commentary:

What was signed is a framework and a capacity target; the factory is not under construction.

2. Tesla opens home backup to newly ordered Model 3 and Model Y cars, with a Powerwall 3 required (EVs / United States)

Summary:

Electrek reported on October 6 that Tesla Energy announced on X the same day that Powershare Home Backup is available for the new Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla's Powershare page now says the feature is currently available for all Cybertruck vehicles and for all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on October 1, 2026 or later. A footnote says all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable, while some, but not all, cars produced before that date are capable; owners can check "Powershare Support" under Software and Additional Vehicle Info. The page says a home that already has a Powerwall and a Wall Connector needs no extra equipment. The specification table lists a Powerwall 3 for Model 3 and Model Y home-backup installation, and says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is coming soon. On an estimate of 30 kWh a day starting from a full battery, a Model 3 or Model Y can extend backup by over two days. The specification table lists maximum continuous power of 11.52 kW.

Commentary:

The opening covers cars ordered after October 1 that already sit with a Powerwall 3, not every Model 3 and Model Y on the road.

3. Renault previews the electric E-Space concept for Paris and publishes Megane LFP figures (New model / France)

Summary:

Renault's global media site posted a release on October 6 saying the electric E-Space Concept will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show press conference on October 12 at 8:30 a.m. CET in Hall 6. The car is 4.70 meters long, 2.02 meters wide, and 1.67 meters high, with six individual seats in three rows on a completely flat floor. The company's FAQ says there are currently no plans for a production version. The same release says the new Megane E-Tech electric gets a 67 kWh LFP battery, a range of up to 500 km, 25% better DC charging performance, and a 15% to 80% charge in 24 minutes. LFP is also set for the Scenic and Renault 5, then the Renault 4. The release lists 27.5 kWh for the Twingo, 37 kWh for the Renault 5, and 67 kWh for the Megane and Scenic.

Commentary:

October 6 published a concept that debuts on October 12, plus Megane battery figures that are already in the release.

II. Autonomous Driving

4. Waymo starts fully driverless trips in Detroit, initially for employees only (Autonomy / United States)

Summary:

The Detroit Free Press reported on October 6 that Waymo spokesman Chris Bonelli confirmed by email that day that the company is operating fully autonomous vehicles in Detroit. Ride-hailing is not yet open to the public, and the riders for now are Waymo employees. Driving continues downtown and in Corktown, Midtown, Hamtramck, and Indian Village, with a gradual expansion across the broader metropolitan area. Bonelli said the company will follow its safety framework and serve public riders after the technology is validated in the city and local operations are ready. The paper noted that less than a month earlier the company still said trained specialists remained at the wheel and that fully autonomous testing in Detroit had not begun. In its note to the paper, Waymo said that over more than 270 million fully autonomous miles in its operating cities, the Waymo Driver was involved in 95% fewer crashes causing serious or fatal injury than human drivers in the same areas.

Commentary:

The driver's seat is empty, and the passengers so far are company employees.

III. Batteries and Charging

5. NIO reports 183,664 battery swaps on October 5, above the October 1 record (Energy replenishment / China)

Summary:

IT Home reported on October 6 that NIO announced the same day a record 183,664 battery swaps on October 5, 2026. IT Home noted that 183,469 swaps on October 1 had been the previous record. The company said a NIO, Onvo, or Firefly vehicle completed a swap every 0.47 seconds on average. Among highway stations, the Rizhao service area on the G15 toward Haikou recorded 188 swaps, the Dahua service area in Jiangmen on the G15 toward Shenyang recorded 176, and both the Jiangdu service area in Yangzhou on the G2 toward Shanghai and the Hongze Lake service area in Huai'an on the G25 toward Shenzhen recorded 171. In cities, the Qujiang Shaozhou station in Shaoguan and the Sinopec No. 10 station in Shanghai each recorded 147, and Yiwu Heart in Jinhua recorded 143. As of the report, NIO had built 9,541 charging and swapping stations, including 4,165 swap stations, with more than 127 million swaps completed, and 1,073 highway swap stations connecting more than 550 cities.

Commentary:

The new high is the return-day count, 195 swaps above October 1.

6. Water opens a 400 kW charger at a Korean expressway rest area, with 123 chargers planned at 23 sites (Charging / South Korea)

Summary:

MobilityPlaza reported on October 6 that Water, the fast-charging network of Bright Energy Partners, has opened South Korea's first 400 kW ultra-fast charging station at a highway rest area, at the Seoul-bound Cheongju Rest Area on the Gyeongbu Expressway. The site has two 400 kW chargers and two 200 kW chargers, and the units support both NACS and DC Combo connectors. It is the first of 23 rest areas where Water will install 123 chargers under Korea Expressway Corporation's expansion program. Of those chargers, 62 will deliver 400 kW. More than ten stations are scheduled to open in October, and the rest will follow in sequence. When the rollout is finished, Water's highway network will grow from 274 chargers at 50 rest areas to 397 chargers at 73 sites.

Commentary:

The site that opened is Cheongju; the 123 chargers are the rest of the rollout.

7. Chaebi is picked for Korea's first public Plug & Charge pilot, starting with 30 fast chargers (Charging / South Korea)

Summary:

Star News Korea reported on October 6 that fast-charging operator Chaebi announced that day it had been selected as the first pilot operator for the electric-vehicle automatic charging and payment service, Plug & Charge, promoted by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. The company plans to apply the service first to 30 public fast chargers from the end of October and to check stability in real charging use. The report said the ministry intends to expand the service later to public fast chargers nationwide that support the function, based on the pilot. Chaebi said one reason it was chosen is that it had already fitted a hardware security module chip to the ministry's fast chargers.

Commentary:

October 6 confirmed the pilot slot; service on the 30 chargers is set for the end of the month.

8. Vietnam's public charging stations must serve compatible vehicles and show prices from July 1, 2027 (Charging / Vietnam)

Summary:

TechNode Global reported on October 6 that Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade has issued national technical regulation QCVN 32:2026/BCT for charging stations, effective July 1, 2027. The report does not give a separate signing date for the circular. The rule covers stations in public areas, car parks, and rest stops, and outdoor or stand-alone sites. It does not cover basements or indoor garages, private stations, wireless chargers, in-car chargers, or test equipment. Public stations must meet technical standards for connectors, charging modes, and specifications so compatible vehicles can share them, and control systems must not block charging for setups already declared compatible. Commercial stations must show the price, billing method, and electricity used before and during each session, and protect that data from tampering. Stations installed before July 2027 may keep operating, with a six-month safety review and up to two years to fix shortcomings; later repairs or expansions must meet the new standard. The report says the regulation itself does not specify penalties.

Links:

Commentary:

The obligation in the report is compatibility and price disclosure that takes effect in July 2027, not a station that opened today.

IV. Hydrogen Buses and Labor

9. Toyota and Isuzu's new Sora hydrogen bus is rated at more than 300 kilometers (New model / Japan)

Summary:

Toyota's global newsroom dates the launch of the new Sora fuel-cell route bus to October 5, and electrive reported the vehicle on October 6. The bus combines Isuzu's battery-electric full-flat route-bus platform with Toyota's fuel-cell system. Toyota's urban-model specifications list length, width, and height of 10,545 mm, 2,485 mm, and 3,440 mm, and a capacity of 70 people: 19 seated, 50 standing, and one crew member. The fuel-cell stack is rated at 113 kW. Two AC induction motors produce 220 kW and 970 Nm combined. Three 70 MPa hydrogen tanks total 471 liters, and the propulsion battery is lithium-ion. Toyota says total hydrogen-tank capacity is about 20% lower than the first generation, while range is about 100 kilometers longer, at over 300 kilometers. Refueling takes about 10 minutes, and the time can be cut by about half once compatible high-speed filling stations are in place. A one-touch wheelchair securement option is expected to be orderable from around April 2027. The newsroom page does not list a price.

Links:

Commentary:

The specification sheet carries range and tank volume; price and export plans were not published with it.

10. Unifor sets an October 17-18 strike-authorization vote on the Stellantis contract (Labor / Canada)

Summary:

Unifor said on October 6 that talks with Stellantis remain at an impasse and that it will hold strike-authorization votes. Authorization gives the bargaining committee the power to call a strike if necessary and does not by itself mean a walkout. The unresolved issues include the future of Brampton Assembly and a core economic pattern that the company has made conditional on an agreement to close and sell the plant. Votes will take place on October 17 and 18, with results on October 19. National president Lana Payne said in the release that the issues go beyond Brampton to job security for all members and the future of Stellantis operations in Canada, and that a strike remains a last resort. The Detroit Free Press reported the same day that the union represents about 8,000 Stellantis auto workers in Canada, that Brampton employs more than 2,000 members, that the company earlier this month entered a memorandum with defense contractor Roshel to sell the plant, that the contract expired on September 20, and that formal talks stalled on September 11.

Links:

Commentary:

October 6 scheduled a mid-month authorization vote; it did not stop the plants.

Today's Summary
