Today's auto and mobility briefing for October 5, 2026, with summaries, links, and commentary.

I. EVs and Markets

1. Germany registered 256,774 cars in September; battery EVs took 34.5%, and Tesla rose 268.7% (EVs / Germany)

Summary:

Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) on October 5 published press release No. 41/2026. New passenger-car registrations in September were 256,774, up 9.0% from a year earlier. The January-September total was 2,221,798, up 5.3%. Private registrations rose 28.5% and accounted for 40.3%; commercial registrations fell 1.2%. Battery-electric cars numbered 88,599, or 34.5% of the market, more than one in three. Hybrids numbered 98,871, up 1.7%, for a 38.5% share; plug-in hybrids were flat versus a year earlier, at a 10.8% share. Petrol cars numbered 44,632, down 29.2%, for a 17.4% share. Diesel cars numbered 23,058, down 20.1%, for a 9.0% share. Average CO2 emissions of new cars were 82.7 g/km, down 19.6%. Among import brands with more than 4,000 registrations in the month, Tesla gained the most: 12,552 vehicles, up 268.7%, for a 4.9% share. Tesla's nine-month total was 44,810, up 201.9%. BYD registered 6,040, up 85.6%, for a 2.4% share. Volkswagen registered 42,461, down 6.1%, and remained the largest German brand with a 16.5% share. Tagesschau reported the same day that the government said an EV purchase subsidy in place since May had already been paid to 100,000 applicants.

Commentary:

The official table published today is a share-and-brand printout: battery EVs are above one-third, while petrol and diesel are still shrinking year over year.

2. Bloomberg: U.S. EV share is near 6% this year, and dealers are asking for electric inventory again (EVs / United States)

Summary:

Claims Journal on October 5 carried a report by Kara Carlson and Gabrielle Coppola. A year after the $7,500 federal EV tax credit ended, U.S. EV demand is stabilizing, but it has not returned to the pre-expiry peak. Cox Automotive puts EVs at close to 6% of the U.S. new-car market this year. In last year's third quarter, the rush before the credit expired pushed the share to nearly 11%. Dealer EV inventory fell from about a 180-day supply in early 2026 to 78 days in August, roughly in line with combustion-vehicle stocks. Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter, above the roughly 17,600 analysts expected. The report ties that to the first full quarter of the midsize R2 SUV, priced around $50,000. Tesla sold 486,532 vehicles in the quarter, down 2.1%, and ahead of the roughly 464,000 average analyst estimate. Randy Parker, chief executive of Hyundai's North American business, said more dealers are asking for EV inventory as gas prices rise, but the company is not planning to raise production. Ford's U.S. sales chief Rob Kaffl said Friday that Mustang Mach-E is seeing returning customers, while volumes have not rebounded significantly from last year.

Commentary:

The evidence in today's piece is a share stuck near 6%, thinner dealer stocks, and two EV makers beating delivery estimates.

3. Hyundai opens U.K. orders for the IONIQ 3, from £18,495 after the grant (New model / United Kingdom)

Summary:

Hyundai Motor UK said on October 5 that the new compact electric hatch, the IONIQ 3, is available to order, and that every version qualifies for Band 1 of the U.K. Electric Car Grant, a £3,750 discount. After the grant, the Advance with the 42 kWh battery is £18,495 on the road, against £22,245 before the grant. The Advance with the 61 kWh battery is £21,995. The N Line Evo is £28,195, against £31,945 before the grant. The company says the 61 kWh version offers up to 308 miles of WLTP range. The Independent reported the same day that the 42 kWh version offers up to 213 miles. Ashley Andrew, president of Hyundai Motor UK, said more customers registered interest before launch than for any new Hyundai introduced in the U.K., and that cars will reach retailers this month. Reservation holders who convert to a full order receive the full £3,750 grant instead of the previous £1,500 reservation saving. Hyundai Finance for the Advance 61 kWh is £355 a month with a £355 deposit over 48 months at 8.9% APR representative. The car has a drag coefficient of 0.263, a 441-litre boot, and is the first Hyundai developed for Europe with Pleos Connect, based on Android Automotive.

Commentary:

The price on the order page is the figure after the grant is applied to every trim, not a separate manufacturer cut.

II. Autonomous Driving and Mobility Platforms

4. Volvo and Waabi start customer freight for Warp in Texas, with an observer still in the driver's seat (Autonomy / United States)

Summary:

Volvo Group said on October 5 that Volvo Autonomous Solutions and Waabi have started their first customer operation in Texas. A Volvo VNL Autonomous powered by the Waabi Driver is hauling freight directly to third-party facilities on the Dallas-Houston corridor for Warp, a network that handles both less-than-truckload and full-truckload freight. The companies said autonomous hauls currently run with an observer in the driver's seat. The VNL Autonomous is built with redundancies for six safety-critical systems. Nils Jaeger, president of Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said experience on the Dallas-Houston lane will be used to add routes. Waabi chief operating officer Lior Ron called the work a first step toward using the truck inside less-than-truckload networks and delivering to third-party sites.

Commentary:

The trucks are moving a customer's freight, and an observer is still in the driver's seat.

5. Moia starts invited passenger rides in autonomous ID. Buzz shuttles in Orlando (Autonomy / United States)

Summary:

electrive reported on October 5 that Moia America, the U.S. arm of Volkswagen's mobility brand, and autonomous-shuttle operator Beep have begun invited passenger trips in Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida. Riders book through the Beep app and travel on three fixed routes with set pick-up and drop-off points in Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD vehicles equipped with Mobileye. Paul DeLong, co-president of Moia America, called it the company's first public-facing autonomous mobility experience in the United States. The report says this is the first time Moia vehicles are in traffic at normal speeds with passengers. Trained staff ride along and can intervene. The stated goal is to supply Beep with 5,000 autonomous vehicles for shared autonomous mobility, aimed at shared public transport rather than individual robotaxis.

Commentary:

Passengers are on board, on fixed routes, with staff who can take over.

6. Verne's chief executive confirms Uber has invested; no amount disclosed (Mobility platforms / Europe)

Summary:

EVwire reported on October 5 that Marko Pejkovic, co-founder and chief executive of Croatian robotaxi company Verne, confirmed on LinkedIn that Uber has invested in Verne. The report says Uber's public line in March, when it teamed with Verne and Pony.ai, was that it "intends to invest." Verne co-founder Mate Rimac had described Uber as an investor on social media the previous week. Pejkovic's reply did not give an amount or a round. EVwire wrote that in August Uber added Verne robotaxis, still with a safety operator, to its Zagreb app, and that in September Verne and Pony.ai removed the safety operator for invited riders on a 22-kilometer route linking the airport, Verne's headquarters, and the city center. The steering-wheel-free, pedal-free two-seater Rimac mentioned remains a later vehicle.

Commentary:

What was newly confirmed is that the investment has been made, not the size of it, and not that the wheel-less car is in service.

III. Batteries and Charging

7. Honda and Taisei publish the base technology for in-motion wireless charging, with public-road tests from fiscal 2027 (Charging / Japan)

Summary:

Honda said on October 5 that Honda R&D, Taisei Corporation, and Taisei Rotec have developed the underlying technology for a magnetic-coupling wireless power transfer road system that can charge electric vehicles while they are moving. Demonstration testing on public roads is planned from Japanese fiscal 2027, which starts on April 1, 2027. Honda has worked on dynamic wireless power transfer since 2021, and the three companies have researched together since 2025. The system is aimed at vehicles from passenger EVs to large commercial EVs, and the in-road units and pavement are designed for traffic that includes vehicles of about 20 tons gross weight. Honda said integrating the inverter and coil into one in-road unit with DC distribution was the first such unit publicly disclosed as of the end of September 2026, based on Honda's own research. From late 2026, a test roadway at the Taisei Group's Tamura future-technology field will be used for a durability load equivalent to one million wheel passes at 49 kilonewtons per wheel, power-transfer tests, and tests of measures against electromagnetic leakage, plus verification of output up to about 150 kilowatts. The companies will also join a NEXCO East demonstration, the Tateyama Project, on the Tateyama Expressway in Chiba from fiscal 2027. Honda plans to present the work at Japan Mobility Show Bizweek on October 13-16 and at the ITS World Congress 2026 in Gangneung, South Korea, on October 19-23.

Commentary:

What was published is the hardware that goes under the pavement; the public-road demonstration is scheduled for fiscal 2027, not a road that is live today.

8. CCTV: some highway service areas tell drivers to leave at 80% charge during the return peak (Charging / China)

Summary:

CCTV News reported on October 5 that electric vehicles queued at many highway service areas during the National Day holiday, and that some sites now require drivers to leave once the battery reaches 80%. Qin Jian, director of the charging-service center at State Grid's smart vehicle-network company, said lithium-ion batteries fast-charge from 0% to 80% and then taper, so the last 20% takes about as long as the first 80%. The report says an 80% stop makes sense at peak times, while drivers can still fill the battery when sites are quiet. It cited the Ministry of Transport's view that outbound trips are spread out and return trips bunch up. October 5 and 6 are the core return days, with charging peaks from 11:00 to 21:00 on the 5th and from 10:00 to 22:00 on the 6th. A list of especially busy service areas was drawn up before the holiday, with mobile chargers and high-power fast chargers added. The same report restated figures from the national charging-facility monitoring platform, covering 62,700 highway charging connectors: from 00:00 on October 1 through 24:00 on October 3, there were 2.9686 million charging sessions, up 48.41%, and 71.6193 million kilowatt-hours, up 49.39%. Drivers can check whether a connector is free in the e-Lu Changtong mini program.

Commentary:

What is new today is the leave-at-80% rule and the return-peak window; the first three days' session and energy totals are the backdrop in the same report.

9. A Volvo electric truck completes Finland's first public megawatt charge in Kotka (Charging / Finland)

Summary:

Plugit said on October 5 that Finland's first public Megawatt Charging System session is complete. On October 2, Volvo's new all-electric FH Aero Electric charged at Plugit's PRO station in Kotka. The company said the truck can charge at up to 700 kilowatts and has a range of up to 700 kilometers. The session was completed both through Volvo Open Charge and with Plugit's own cable, and both methods worked. Janne Silvonen, product manager for Volvo's electric trucks, said the combination of long range and MCS charging can make electric trucks practical for longer hauls. Plugit said public MCS charging in Finland is available in Kotka and Lieto. The company has about 350 public charge points, nine of them for heavy vehicles, and a tenth heavy-vehicle public point is under construction in Eskilstuna, Sweden.

Links:

Commentary:

October 5 is the publication date of a session completed on October 2; 700 kilowatts is the truck's stated capability, not a measured power for that session.

IV. Manufacturing and Supply Chain

10. Toyota halts three Thai plants through October 10 after flooding (Supply chain / Thailand)

Summary:

Zigwheels on October 5 cited a statement from Toyota Motor Thailand. Production at the Samrong, Banpho, and Gateway plants is suspended from that day through Saturday, October 10. Flooding disrupted parts deliveries in Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao, and Chonburi. The company said the timetable can change depending on conditions and whether parts deliveries resume. It is coordinating with suppliers, managing parts inventory, and adjusting production and logistics plans. Incoming-parts inspection, assembly process controls, and quality checks at each stage will continue under the existing standards. If a customer's delivery date is affected, dealers will be asked to tell the customer.

Links:

Commentary:

Three assembly plants are down because parts are not arriving, and the October 10 date can still move.
