6. The Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering Teams Tell Wizards They Are Unionizing (Labor)
Summary:
Kotaku reported on October 6 that the teams behind the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop RPG, its online companion D&D Beyond, Magic: The Gathering, and Duel Masters told leadership that morning of their intent to unionize. They would join United Wizards of the Coast, formed earlier this year by Magic: The Gathering Arena workers with the Communications Workers of America. A statement on the union site seeks layoff protections, better wages, protections against AI, remote-work protections, and full ownership of work created outside Wizards of the Coast offices. Kotaku writes that success would bring every Wizards IP except Magic: The Gathering Online under union representation, after Arena workers won their election earlier this year. The union is asking supporters to sign a petition urging parent company Hasbro to recognize it voluntarily. Kotaku also notes that, before the Arena election, Wizards leadership sent letters asking those developers to consider carefully whether a union was what they wanted.

Commentary:
The public step is a notice of intent plus a petition; Hasbro has not said whether it will recognize the union.
II. Streaming and Deals
7. Paramount Closes Its $110 Billion Takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery and Names the Combined Company Skydance (Merger)
Summary:
The BBC reported on October 6 that Paramount Skydance has completed its $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The combined company is named Skydance Corporation, with David Ellison as chairman and chief executive. The deal places HBO, CBS, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Comedy Central, DC Studios, and Food Network in one group, and adds franchises including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, and The Lord of the Rings. The BBC says a settlement last month between U.S. states, Paramount, and Ellison cleared the way forward. That settlement requires at least 30 films a year, sets guardrails against AI-generated films, and requires 20% of film production in the United States for the first two years, rising to more than 30% over the following three years. Missing the annual quota forces a sale of Paramount's 49% stake in Miramax. The Verge, citing the closing release, says HBO Max and Paramount+ will "unify into a single service over time." No date or new name is given, and HBO chief executive Casey Bloys will oversee it. Ellison told investors in March that a merger would mean a little over 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers. The Verge sets that beside Netflix's 325 million subscribers reported in January.

8. The Primetime Emmys Move to Prime Video in 2027 under a Six-Year Global Deal (Streaming)
Summary:
Variety reported on October 6 that the Television Academy confirmed on Tuesday a six-year deal for Amazon's Prime Video to carry the Primetime Emmys, effective in September 2027. It is the first time the show leaves broadcast television since the ceremony began in 1949, and it ends the 31-year "wheel" among ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox. The telecast sits in front of the paywall and will be free in the United States and in the more than 240 countries and territories where Prime Video operates. Variety cites sources for a global license fee of around $15 million a year. The previous wheel paid about $8 million to $10 million a year for domestic rights only. Academy chair Cris Abrego did not confirm the figure but said it was "definitely an increase." Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said a three-hour show is plenty and that Amazon does not plan to make it longer. Abrego also said a merger of the Television Academy and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences could happen by mid-2027, before the next Emmys.

Commentary:
Free access, a global footprint, and a six-year term are confirmed by the parties; the roughly $15 million annual fee is still a source figure the Academy did not confirm.
III. Regulation
9. Licensed Betting Sites and Apps in Brazil Start Going Offline, with About R$1.7 Billion Estimated for Return (Regulation)
Summary:
Agência Brasil reported at 9:55 a.m. on October 6 that sports-betting and online-gaming sites and apps begin going offline nationwide on Tuesday under provisional measure 1.394/2026, signed by President Lula on September 25. The deadline for users to withdraw balances themselves was 11:59 p.m. on October 5. Operators must report remaining balances to financial institutions by CPF on October 7 and 8. Banks are to return the money from October 9 through October 14. Where a bank cannot complete the refund, Caixa Econômica Federal may intermediate payments from October 14. The Secretariat of Prizes and Bets estimates that about 23 million bettors still had balances in those accounts. The government calculates that about R$1.7 billion will be returned. By the end of September, the ministries of Justice and Finance had requested blocks on 5,209 domains tied to illegal betting. The measure is in force but still needs congressional approval, or it lapses within the constitutional deadline.

Commentary:
The takedown, reporting, and refund calendar is written down; Congress has not finished voting on the measure, and R$1.7 billion is the government's estimate.
10. Philippine Raids on Suspected Unlicensed Offshore Gaming Detain 244 Foreign Nationals in Mindanao (Regulation)
Summary:
CDC Gaming reported on October 6, citing the Philippine Immigration Bureau, that the military and law enforcement raided two sites on the southern island of Mindanao on Friday and detained 244 foreign nationals in operations aimed at suspected unlicensed offshore online gaming. At the first site authorities held 110 Chinese nationals, two Cambodian nationals, and one Hong Kong resident. At the second site they arrested 131 more people, most of them Chinese, along with Malaysian, Indonesian, and Myanmar citizens. Computers, laptops, mobile phones, and SIM cards were confiscated. The report places the raids in continued enforcement after the country's 2024 ban on Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators.

The headcount, nationalities, and seized equipment come from the bureau's statement; the report does not give a money figure or a charging update.

11. ESL Pro League: 1win Beat Spirit 2-0 to Reach the Playoffs, and Aurora Eliminate FURIA (Esports)
Summary:

A second HLTV report the same day says Aurora beat FURIA in three maps to qualify: Dust2 8-13, Mirage 13-9, and Nuke 13-9. FURIA also fall into the 2-2 pool, alongside Spirit and PARIVISION, waiting on a decider.

Both results are today's qualification matches; the Major invitation odds are HLTV's estimate, not an official slot.
