1. Hyderabad cross-section: mild cognitive impairment tracked with more vitamin D, B2, and B9 deficiency (Nutrition)
Summary:
Scientists at India’s ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition (Vepakomma, Reddy and colleagues) published a community cross-sectional study in Nutrients (DOI: 10.3390/nu18152428; The Hindu reported August 17, 2026). Among 184 Hyderabad adults aged 55–85, cognition was screened with MoCA and blood was assayed for vitamins A, D, B1, B2, B6, B9, and B12 plus neuronal markers (β-amyloid, total tau, neurofilament light chain, BDNF). Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) prevalence was 36.4%. The MCI group had lower vitamins D, B1, B2, B6, B9, and B12, with D, B2, and B9 deficiencies more common; glucose and systolic blood pressure were higher. Higher vitamins D and B6 tracked with better MoCA scores; B2 associated with BDNF and Nfl, B6 with tau. Same-time associations—not proof that supplements prevent dementia.

Commentary:
Check for true vitamin D and B-group deficiency and control blood pressure and glucose before buying a “brain” megadose; MCI still needs a proper cognitive work-up.
II. Exercise and Training Science
2. Three-level meta of 19 RCTs: HIIT improved executive function and memory in healthy adults; attention and processing speed did not (Training)
Summary:
Zhuang, Shi and colleagues reported in Chinese General Practice (online August 11, 2026; Vol. 29, No. 26) a PRISMA review through August 2025: 19 RCTs and 2,277 healthy participants comparing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) with moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on cognition. Versus control, HIIT improved executive function (Hedges' g = 0.36, 95% CI 0.10–0.61) and memory (g = 0.61, 0.12–1.09); information processing (g = 0.69, −0.65 to 2.03) and attention (g = 0.36, −0.20 to 0.92) were not significant. Meta-regression suggested larger memory gains at older ages and around BMI 27.66 kg/m²; shorter rest intervals and longer session duration associated with executive-function change. Authors discuss exploratory prescription cues (~150 s rest, ~6 min bouts, 6–12 weeks). HIIT is framed as a time-efficient alternative to MICT, not a general “brain workout.”

If you want cardiorespiratory and cognitive stimulus, put short high-intensity intervals into the week; do not copy the regression’s “6 minutes / 150 seconds” as a mandatory recipe, and this pool did not establish attention or processing-speed gains.
III. Public Health and Disease Prevention
3. NCIRS: about 6.7% of Australians were measles-susceptible in 2019, with herd immunity near the floor (Public health)
Summary:
Croker, Beard and colleagues at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance published today in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health. Combining the national immunisation register with serosurveys, they estimated about 1.7 million people (6.7%) lacked sufficient measles immunity in 2019; overall immunity was 93.3%, at the low end of WHO’s 93–95% herd-protection range. Susceptibility was highest in infants too young for a full schedule and in cohorts born from the late 1970s onward; every birth cohort from 1977 had at least about 5% susceptible. People aged 15–35 accounted for about half of notified cases in 2008–2022. Authors warn post-pandemic childhood coverage declines may mean the 2019 figure understates today’s gap. National notifications rose from single digits in 2022 to 181 in 2025, with 113 cases so far in 2026.

Commentary:
Anyone born in or after 1966 without written proof of two measles-containing doses or immunity should check with a GP before travel and catch up if needed; infants follow the national schedule, with a possible extra travel dose after 6 months in outbreak settings.
4. NTU Hospital and Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration: H. pylori stool-antigen positivity about 18.2%, ~3 million estimated carriers (Public health)
Summary:
Lee Yi-chia and colleagues, with Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration, reported 2024–2025 stool-antigen pilot results in Formosan Journal of Medicine; United Daily News covered the findings on August 17, 2026. Of 10,318 people tested, 1,874 were positive (18.2%). Authors estimate about 1 million carriers aged 20–44 and 2 million aged 45–74, ~3 million nationwide. Infection is linked to about a sixfold higher gastric-cancer risk, and about 80% of gastric cancers relate to the bacterium; some 70–80% of infections are asymptomatic. Indigenous township positivity remains far above the national average (about 48.9% recently, previously near 60%). Since January 1, 2026, people aged 45–74 can receive one lifetime publicly funded stool-antigen test, with positives referred for eradication. Screening epidemiology, not a new mechanism RCT.

Commentary:
If you are in the eligible age band, take the one-time stool-antigen test and finish a prescribed two-week eradication course if positive; skip mouth-to-mouth feeding of infants and use serving chopsticks—closer to this evidence than a “stomach tonic.”
IV. Sleep and Mental Health
5. CHARLS: long sleep plus low physical activity showed the largest cognitive-score deficit in mid-to-older adults (Sleep / Training)
Summary:
Yang, Li, Huang, Zhang, Hu and colleagues published August 16, 2026, in Scientific Reports, a repeated-measures analysis of CHARLS waves 2011–2018: 11,828 adults aged 45+ in 125 cities across 28 provinces (34,714 measurements). Sleep was short (under 6 h), optimal (6–8 h), or long (over 8 h); physical activity used self-reported MET-hours/week tertiles. Versus optimal sleep plus moderate activity, short sleep β = −0.170 (95% CI −0.282 to −0.057) and long sleep β = −0.760 (−0.948 to −0.573); low PA β = −0.200 and high PA β = −0.338. The worst joint cell was long sleep plus low PA (β = −1.026, −1.353 to −0.698); moderate PA partly offset short sleep (β = −0.128, P = 0.169). Observational; sleep and activity were self-reported.

Aim for about 6–8 hours at night and keep weekday activity in a moderate band—more sleep plus sitting, or a single brutal weekend session, is a poorer match to this joint pattern.
6. Finnish RCT two-year follow-up: coached internet CBT for child anxiety held through 24 months (Mental health)
Summary:
Sourander, Kaajalaakso and colleagues published a Master Your Worries open follow-up in JAMA Network Open (DOI: 10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2026.29195; University of Turku release August 17, 2026). The parent RCT (2017–2020) randomized 465 Finnish children aged 10–13 with elevated anxiety (SCARED total ≥22; median age 11; 71% girls), identified in school health checks, to 10-week internet CBT plus weekly telephone coaching or digital psychoeducation. At 12 months the intervention showed greater improvement of 4.5 SCARED-C points (95% CI 2.2–6.8, d = 0.35) and 3.4 SCARED-P points (1.8–5.1, d = 0.36); at 24 months differences remained (SCARED-C 4.4, d = 0.29; SCARED-P 2.3, d = 0.19). Effects grew from 6 to 12 months and then held; social-anxiety subscales also favored iCBT. Parental mental health did not differ. Long-term follow-up of the original RCT.

Commentary:
For school-age anxiety, prefer structured CBT with coaching (digital is acceptable) over tip sheets alone; moderate-to-severe cases still need in-person assessment, and an app is not crisis care.
7. Adolescent depression arts camp: default–control network coupling rose, without a matching drop in depression scores (Mental health)
Summary:
Cullen, Roediger and colleagues published August 17, 2026, in Translational Psychiatry. Thirty-nine adolescents with depression completed resting-state fMRI before and after a two-week Creativity Camp; about half were also scanned two weeks earlier as a waitlist approximation. Graph theory tracked coupling among Default, Control, Salience, and Limbic networks. Whole-sample Default–Control, Limbic–Control, and Salience–Default coupling increased after camp (P < 0.05, corrected); waitlist contrasts showed larger camp-period change for two pairs (uncorrected). Connectivity change did not significantly correlate with depression-symptom change. Authors call for larger randomized trials before claiming how arts engagement produces clinical benefit.

An arts camp can sit inside comprehensive care for adolescent depression; this mechanism study is not evidence that “drawing treats depression,” and clinical assessment remains the backbone.
8. Overnight EEG: N3/REM network global efficiency weakly tracked subjective sleepiness and insomnia severity (Sleep)
Summary:
Garg, Behera and colleagues published August 17, 2026, in Nature and Science of Sleep. Fifty-two healthy male university students (ages 19–30) had full-night PSG; debiased weighted phase-lag index global efficiency (GE) was computed in five bands during N3 and REM and regressed on ESS and ISI. Alpha-band GE was lower in REM and delta-band GE lower in N3. Higher REM GE in delta/beta/gamma associated with higher ESS; higher N3 theta GE associated with lower ISI. GE models explained about 8.2% of ISI and 19.0% of ESS variance; conventional macrostructural PSG indices were not significantly related to the subjective scales. Single-sex, non-clinical, small sample—not a diagnostic tool.

Feeling unrested after a “full” night may not show up in stage percentages; fix a regular schedule first rather than buying an unvalidated “brain-network” wearable readout.
V. Evidence and Clarification
9. Survey across 15 EU countries: RTE plant-based substitutes were mostly satisfactory; meat and cheese alternatives had more hygiene issues (Food safety)
Summary:
An EFSA Focal Point tailor-made activity, reported August 17, 2026, by Food Safety News and Food Safety Magazine, sampled 1,533 ready-to-eat plant-based dairy, meat, and fish substitutes in 15 member states, mostly near the end of labeled shelf life. Microbiological quality was mostly satisfactory. Listeria monocytogenes was found in 1 of 1,533 samples (a chilled oat-based milk substitute, below 1 CFU/g); Salmonella in 0 of 1,332. Bacillus cereus/Bacillus spp. in 17 of 1,113, with three samples above 100,000 CFU/g classed unsatisfactory, mainly meat and cheese substitutes; five high-count samples used tofu as the main plant ingredient. Clostridium perfringens/Clostridium spp. were borderline unsatisfactory in 99 of 810 (12.2%); none exceeded 10,000 CFU/g. Of samples with physico-chemical data, 68.7% had pH ≥5.1 and 92.9% water activity ≥0.94, conditions that can support growth. Authors state conclusions are theirs, not an EFSA-adopted output, and call for monitoring and more consistent national criteria.

Commentary:
Plant-based is not sterile: keep refrigerated meat and cheese analogues cold and eat them promptly; people with weakened immunity should treat ready-to-eat soft analogue cheeses with extra care.
