1. Hubble Europa Plume Reanalysis Drops Confidence from 99.9% to Below 90% (Planetary Science)
Summary:
BBC Sky at Night reported on August 17 that Kurt Retherford of Southwest Research Institute and Lorenz Roth of KTH Royal Institute of Technology, among others, reanalyzed about 14 years of Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS) data and judged the 2014 case for water-vapor plumes on Europa weaker than first claimed. The Astronomy & Astrophysics paper covers 23 Lyα (1216 Å) images from 1999 and 2012–2020, all sunlit and out of Jupiter transit: a global hydrogen exosphere appears in every epoch, but no localized excess that would mark H₂O aurora; the best-constrained 2014/2015 epoch yields a vertical H column of about 1.4×10¹² cm⁻² and a source rate of about 1.1×10²⁷ s⁻¹. Roth said the reanalysis cut confidence in plumes from 99.9% to below 90%, not enough to support the original certainty; plumes are not ruled out and may be rarer, smaller, or harder to see. NASA’s Europa Clipper, due at Jupiter in April 2030, is the planned decisive close-flyby test.

2. Shenzhou-23 Past 80 Days On Orbit: China’s First Human-Research Program in Space (Human Spaceflight)
Summary:
Xinhua and Wen Wei Po reported on August 17 that the Shenzhou-23 crew—Zhu Yangzhu, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Li Jiaying—has spent more than 80 days aboard China’s space station. China Manned Space’s Tiangong TV release on August 16 showed science experiments, training, and drills proceeding as planned for August 9–15. The mission includes a one-year stay trial and will run China’s first dedicated human-research program in space, aiming at longer-duration flight data and medical-support validation. Last week the crew used near-infrared brain imaging for a spatial brain-network test, finished a microgravity intuitive-physics behavior experiment, and collected and processed blood for bone-metabolism and space omics work (some assays on orbit, some samples to return). They also ran teleoperated rendezvous training, medical-rescue drills, and a second full-system pressure emergency exercise.

3. HUTCHMED–AstraZeneca SAFFRON Phase 3 Hits PFS and OS in MET-Driven EGFR-Mutated Lung Cancer (Oncology)
Summary:
HUTCHMED and AstraZeneca on August 17 reported high-level results from the global Phase 3 SAFFRON trial: in EGFR-mutated non-small cell lung cancer with high MET overexpression or amplification after progression on TAGRISSO (osimertinib), ORPATHYS (savolitinib, 300 mg twice daily) plus TAGRISSO (80 mg once daily) produced statistically significant and clinically meaningful gains in both progression-free survival and overall survival versus platinum doublet chemotherapy. The open-label study enrolled 338 patients with locally advanced or metastatic disease at 230 centers in 29 countries; PFS was primary, with OS and objective response among key secondaries. Safety matched the known profiles of the two drugs, with no new findings. The combination is already approved in China on the SACHI Phase 3; the companies called SAFFRON the first global Phase 3 to show dual PFS and OS benefit in this setting and will present details at a forthcoming meeting for worldwide filings.

4. argenx ALKIVIA Phase 3: Vyvgart Hytrulo Meets Primary Endpoint in Autoimmune Myositis (Immunology)
Summary:
argenx on August 17 announced topline results from the Phase 3 ALKIVIA trial of subcutaneous VYVGART Hytrulo (efgartigimod alfa and hyaluronidase-qvfc). The global randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 2/3 enrolled 264 adults with active autoimmune myositis on background therapy; Phase 3 included 175 patients and a protocol-mandated steroid taper. In the combined immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) and dermatomyositis (DM) population, mean Total Improvement Score at week 52 was 15.4 points better than placebo (47.95 vs 32.56, p=0.0011), with separation from week 4 through one year. Prespecified subtypes: IMNM gained 14.8 points (45.05 vs 30.24, p=0.0048); DM gained 14.5 points (51.51 vs 36.96, p=0.1093) and missed significance in the smaller cohort. About 20,000 of an estimated 100,000 U.S. adults with autoimmune myositis have IMNM, which has no approved therapy. Safety matched prior efgartigimod studies; argenx plans an FDA filing in IMNM as soon as possible.

5. EyePoint LUGANO Phase 3: DURAVYU Misses Wet-AMD Primary in the Full Dataset (Ophthalmology)
Summary:
EyePoint on August 17 released topline data from LUGANO, the first of two pivotal Phase 3 trials of the intravitreal insert DURAVYU (vorolanib 2.7 mg, redosed every six months) versus on-label aflibercept in wet age-related macular degeneration. Change from baseline in best-corrected visual acuity did not meet non-inferiority in the full dataset. An ad hoc analysis excluding a 4% asymmetric cohort (9 of 211 patients with ≥15-letter vision loss unrelated to wet AMD) reached nominal p=0.0096; no such losses occurred in the control arm. Secondary endpoints: a 42% cut in treatment burden (nominal p<0.0001; about two fewer injections through week 56); 76% of DURAVYU patients supplement-free to week 32; 54% supplement-free and 79% with zero or one supplement to week 56. Safety was comparable to control, with no insert migration, retinal vasculitis, or severe intraocular inflammation. Topline from the twin LUCIA trial is expected in Q4 2026, with a possible NDA in the first half of 2027.

6. CanSino Td5cp Adolescent/Adult Pertussis Vaccine NDA Accepted by China’s NMPA (Vaccines)
Summary:
CanSino Biologics announced on August 16–17 that the NMPA accepted its domestic marketing application for an adsorbed acellular pertussis (five-component) diphtheria-tetanus combination vaccine for people aged 6 years and older (adolescent/adult Td5cp); acceptance number CXSS2600123. The product entered priority review in May 2026. Versus the infant three-component DT3cP (Pankangxin) approved in April, Td5cp adds the FIM2 and FIM3 pertussis antigens, each purified separately and blended at a defined ratio. The company said technical review, clinical-site inspection, and manufacturing inspection still lie ahead, with timing uncertain until approval and lot release. A rebound in pertussis in China over the past two years is the backdrop for an adult booster gap.

7. Isotopes in Meltwater from 61 Glaciers: Hydroclimate Archives Are Being Lost (Climate)
Summary:
Vystavna and colleagues published on August 17 in Communications Earth & Environment a Global Glacier Meltwater Line (GGML; slope 8.46, intercept 19.6) from stable water isotopes (δ¹⁸O, δ²H) in meltwater of 61 glaciers (7 Europe, 13 Asia, 1 Africa, 33 North America, 7 South America), compared with the Global Meteoric Water Line to quantify loss of past-hydroclimate information stored in ice. Maximum average archive losses: 47% in Europe, 31% in Asia, 39% in the Americas, and 72% for the single African glacier. Even with about ±25% relative uncertainty, Asia and the Americas remain well below Europe. A random-forest analysis pointed to precipitation-pattern shifts over the past 20 years as the main driver of archive loss. The authors warn that Africa and some basins are thinly sampled; archive loss does not itself trigger hazards but can mark rapid glacier reorganization.

8. MPI-M Observed Fingerprint: Human Warming Is Empirical in Most Regions, Still Buried in the Southern Ocean and North Atlantic (Climate)
Summary:
Aruhasi, Olonscheck, Marotzke, and Chao Li of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology published on August 17 in Science Advances an “observed fingerprint” that links regional temperature change to the globally averaged rise—where models and observations agree well—using surface temperatures from 1850 to 2022, without assuming a model-derived pattern a priori. Arctic warming from mid-century, with a slowdown from the late 1990s to early 2010s, is attributed to natural variability while the human signal remains; the southeastern Pacific is similar. In parts of the Southern Ocean and the subpolar North Atlantic, human-induced warming has not clearly emerged from background noise. Lead author Aruhasi said models often underestimate emergence timescales; co-author Chao Li said about 45 years of satellite records already suffice for purely empirical evidence of human-caused warming in most regions.

Reading the fingerprint from the temperature record instead of borrowing it from CMIP gives adaptation and litigation a regional map that does not depend on model priors.
9. China’s NMEFC: Niño Key-Region Peak Near 3.5°C as a Super El Niño Keeps Growing (Climate)
Summary:
Xinhua on August 17 carried an essay by Tan Jing, a senior engineer at the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center: the latest model run puts the peak anomaly in the equatorial central-eastern Pacific key region near 3.5°C, higher than the June forecast, with the event still developing and possibly setting a historical extreme. Monitoring put the basin into El Niño in May, after which warming accelerated; present surface anomalies already exceed the same-season levels of the 1997–1998 and 2015–2016 super events. Tan notes the Niño 3.4 monitoring box covers about 6 million km², with peaks typically from November to February. For China this summer–autumn: more rain in North China, the Northeast, and south of the Yangtze, less in the middle Yangtze; fewer but stronger typhoons with genesis shifted east and south. Ocean-to-atmosphere lag means the harder test may come in spring–summer 2027, when the Yangtze basin could see abnormally high rainfall. “Strongest in 150 years” refers to the span of reliable ocean observations, not geologic time.

10. Chlorine-Mediated Urea Electrooxidation Makes Hydrazine at 1.04 mmol cm⁻² h⁻¹ (Chemistry)
Summary:
Wang, Bai, Zhu and colleagues reported on August 17 in Nature Synthesis a mild electrocatalytic route: co-adsorbed chlorine and urea on platinum selectively form N-chlorourea, which rearranges to hydrazine under alkaline conditions with magnesium hydroxide as catalyst, avoiding the strong oxidants of industrial Olin–Raschig and Bayer ketazine processes. A flow electrolyser delivered 1.04 mmol cm⁻² h⁻¹ of hydrazine and ran stably for 240 hours; the paper also cites 60.1% electron-to-hydrazine efficiency at 100 mA cm⁻². Pt/C kept N-chlorourea Faradaic efficiency above 76% from 20–200 mA cm⁻², with a peak production near 2.86 mmol cm⁻² h⁻¹. The process accepted urine and urea wastewater. Hydrazine is used in propellants and emerging fuel cells; the authors frame the work as nitrogen-waste valorization, not a scaled factory process.

11. Ribosome Display Yields a Protein–Helical-Foldamer Synthon with a >700 Ų Interface (Chemistry)
Summary:
Sigl, Huc and colleagues published on August 17 in open-access Nature Chemistry a ribosome-display selection of an artificial ~7 kDa protein that binds a helical aromatic oligoamide foldamer tightly and selectively. The interface exceeds 700 Ų and serves as a supramolecular synthon for hybrid architectures: a foldamer that holds two proteins at a set distance, a protein that binds two foldamers, and crystals in which proteins and foldamers form cyclic or infinite arrays. Programmable aromatic foldamer backbones vary helix diameter and side chains; the authors argue this fills a gap left by molecular glues and PROTACs whose interfaces are too small or too floppy for architectural control. The work is a structural and assembly demonstration, not a drug or device.

The usual bargain was a molecule fitting a protein pocket; here the protein is selected to fit a synthetic helix, reclaiming spatial precision from flexible linkers.
12. Peking University Plasma “Polish and Paint”: 27.2% Small-Area Perovskite, 24.0% on 100 cm² Modules (Photovoltaics)

Guangming Daily reported on August 17 on work from Huanping Zhou’s group at Peking University’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, published in Science: argon plasma physically etches a defect-rich surface layer (“polish”), then fluorine species from carbon tetrafluoride plasma react in situ with undercoordinated lead to grow a continuous 4–7 nm lead-fluoride layer (“paint”), cutting interfacial defect density by about an order of magnitude. Zhou said champion small-area cells reached 27.2%; 100 cm² modules reached 24.0% with 23.5% certified; small-area devices kept 98.1% of initial efficiency after 2,000 hours at 85°C under 1 sun, and encapsulated modules kept 99.3% after 1,600 hours at 65°C. The team argues dry plasma scales more uniformly than conventional vapor, liquid, or solid passivation.
