Today's auto and mobility briefing for October 17, 2026, with summaries, links, and commentary.

I. New Models and Products

1. Volkswagen Anhui updates the ID. UNYX 06 and 07 with LiDAR, and prices the 07 Lite at 99,900 yuan (New model / China)

Summary:

CnEVPost reported on October 17 that Volkswagen Anhui launched updated ID. UNYX 06 and 07 models on Saturday, adding LiDAR driver assistance based on Horizon Robotics' Journey 6H chip for city navigation on autopilot. The 07 sedan comes in four variants listed from 109,900 to 149,900 yuan, with a Double 11 promotional price of 99,900 yuan (about $14,860) on the Lite, the first time Volkswagen has put a pure-electric promotional price in China below 100,000 yuan. The 06 coupe SUV comes in three variants from 129,900 to 169,900 yuan, with a Lite promotional price of 119,900 yuan. Starting list prices for both are 20,000 yuan below the May launches. A new 77.5 kWh battery brings maximum CLTC range to 630 km and 670 km respectively, and the 07's motor is rated at 170 kW.

Links:

Commentary:

What can be checked is Saturday's price list, the LiDAR system, and the 77.5 kWh battery; 99,900 yuan applies only to the 07 Lite promotion.

2. BMW raises the iX5 EPA range estimate from 435 miles to 450 miles, with certification still pending (New model / United States)

Summary:

InsideEVs reported on October 16 that John Kelly, a BMW product manager for luxury vehicles, said at the U.S. press launch of the fifth-generation X5 that the iX5 60 xDrive, using Gen 6 batteries, is expected to reach up to 450 miles (about 724 km) on the EPA cycle, above the 435-mile figure given this summer. He said the official EPA number should arrive in the coming weeks. Michael Ahlers, head of the X5 project, said the company treats 400 miles as the point at which customers stop worrying about range, and aims for about 450 miles to cover highway driving and air conditioning. The 144 kWh pack is the largest BMW has fitted to a production vehicle, using 46120 cylindrical cells 25 mm taller than those in the iX3 and i3. Charging is quoted at up to 460 kW, with 10% to 80% in 22 minutes. Dealers are scheduled to receive the car in the first quarter of 2027. BMWBlog restated the estimate on October 17. BMW's U.S. model page still showed a preliminary estimate of up to 435 miles when checked.

Links:

Commentary:

The 450-mile figure is the company's estimate from the press launch; EPA certification and the public model page are both still on the earlier number.

3. Tesla Malaysia: new Model 3s can power appliances, and the outlet adapter is rated 230V at 13A (Product / Malaysia)

Summary:

SoyaCincau wrote on October 17 that Tesla Shop Malaysia has listed the Outlet Adapter at RM350 for vehicle-to-load use on the Model 3, Model Y, and Model Y L. Tesla Malaysia's specification is 230V with a maximum continuous current of 13A. Native support had been limited to the Model Y L launched in April; every Model 3 and Model Y built from this month also supports it, and older cars cannot be retrofitted. Owners can check Software, then Additional Vehicle Info, for "Powershare Support: Enabled." Paul Tan reported the same day that the Malaysian Model 3 also gains a 16-inch center screen, a Zen Grey interior, and darker 19-inch wheels.

Links:

Commentary:

What is fixed today is the adapter's voltage and current, and the rule that only cars built from October support it.

II. Markets, Governance, and Exports

4. Xinhua: gasoline cars fell below one-third of sales in September, and NEV penetration reached 67% (Market / China)

Summary:

National Business Daily on October 17 carried a Xinhua report of figures recently released by the China Passenger Car Association. In September 2026, gasoline cars' share of the Chinese market fell below one-third for the first time, and new-energy vehicle penetration rose to 67%. Five years earlier, gasoline cars still held more than 90% of the passenger-car market. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk reposted the figures and commented that China's dependence on oil is falling rapidly. International Energy Agency data in the same report say that in the second quarter of 2026, new-energy vehicles alone displaced the equivalent of 1.5 million barrels of crude oil a day in China, about France's daily oil consumption. The agency expects China's oil demand to peak in 2027, about two years earlier than its previous forecast.

Links:

Commentary:

The 67% figure is the association's September penetration rate; 1.5 million barrels a day is the IEA's second-quarter displacement estimate.

5. The 140th Canton Fair: European buyers talk about distributing Chinese NEVs, and GAC cites seven overseas plants (Exports / China)

Summary:

China News Service reported from Guangzhou on October 17 that, in the new-energy and smart-mobility section of the 140th Canton Fair, Spanish buyer Calzada Amorrortu Martin said he wants to become an agent ahead of others and sell Chinese NEVs back to Europe, starting with distribution and later moving to technology and local production. Another Spanish buyer said he plans to partner on charging posts. The same article cites China Association of Automobile Manufacturers figures: NEV exports in the first three quarters of 2026 were 4.006 million, up 1.3 times, and NEVs have been more than half of auto exports for four straight months. As of September, GAC had seven overseas plants, nine parts hubs, and four global R&D centers. The article also says BYD's Szeged plant in Hungary is planned for 300,000 vehicles a year and about 4 billion euros of investment, with phase-one equipment installed and vehicle assembly scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026; Chery has restarted a former Nissan plant in Spain and the new line is in production; and Xpeng's G6 and G9 are contract-built by Magna in Austria.

Links:

Commentary:

What is new today is buyer intent on the show floor and GAC's overseas footprint; the 4.006 million export figure remains the association's year-to-September total.

6. Volkswagen's chief executive says selected Chinese models are being prepared for Europe (Product / Europe)

Summary:

Autocar reported on October 17 that Volkswagen brand chief executive Thomas Schäfer, interviewed at the Paris motor show, said two years of work have cut material and engineering cost on the China vehicles, and that exports are starting with the global south and markets easier to reach from China, including Australia and the Middle East. He said the company is getting ready to bring one or more vehicles in from China as selected imports, to see how they work, and that this would not replace existing models. He described the 5.2-meter ID. Era as too large for Europe. The article names the Xpeng-co-developed ID. Unyx 09 electric saloon, and the 4.8-meter ID. Aura T6, as candidates that could sit above the smaller ID. Tiguan.

Links:

Commentary:

The statement is that selected imports are being prepared; the article gives no European price, certification date, or plant.

7. Changan Auto: Zhu Huarong leaves the listed company's chair, and Zhao Fei takes it (Governance / China)

Summary:

Xinhua reported on October 17 that China Changan Automobile Group and Chongqing Changan Automobile announced a management change on October 16. Zhu Huarong remains party secretary and chairman of the group and no longer doubles as chairman and party secretary of the listed company. Zhao Fei becomes chairman and party secretary of Changan Auto. Ye Pei becomes director, president, and deputy party secretary. Yang Dayong becomes executive vice president, and Deng Chenghao is promoted to executive vice president. Klaus Zyciora becomes global chief executive advisor and leaves the posts of vice president and head of the global design center. The company said the change follows a year of the two-tier governance structure, with the president now chosen from inside the listed company. The announcement restates a 2030 vehicle target of 5 million, including 2 million overseas, and sales of 6 million in 2035.

Links:

Commentary:

The change splits the listed-company chair from the president; 5 million vehicles remains the company's existing 2030 target.

III. Autonomous Driving

8. London: about 20 ride-hail drivers protest robotaxis outside Wayve (Autonomous driving / United Kingdom)

Summary:

ITV reported on October 17 that about 20 people gathered near Wayve's headquarters in north London on Saturday over safety, jobs, and congestion. Uber launched the UK's first robotaxis bookable in the capital last month with the AI firm, and each vehicle still has a human safety driver. The App Drivers' and Couriers' Union said drivers are being treated as collateral damage and called for compensation. Abdurzak Hadi, who has driven for Uber for more than 12 years, wants the rollout stopped completely and asked Mayor Sadiq Khan to state his position. The London Assembly Transport Committee has urged the government to let Transport for London cap the number of autonomous passenger vehicles, and said it has not heard enough evidence that London should welcome driverless services. TfL granted minicab licences for the vehicles in August. Uber has said more than 140,000 Londoners have opted in to show a preference for self-driving vehicles in the app.

Links:

Commentary:

Saturday's event was a protest of about 20 people against a service that still carries a safety driver.

9. Zagreb: Verne invites reporters onto robotaxis with no safety operator (Autonomous driving / Croatia)

Summary:

CGTN reported on October 17 that Verne, a Croatian firm backed by Uber and powered by Pony.ai, has run a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb since April, until now with a safety operator in the driver's seat. Chief executive Marko Pejkovic said fully driverless testing began in August on the roughly 22 km route between headquarters and the airport. On Tuesday the company invited journalists onto rides he described as Europe's first with no operator in the vehicle, and he hopes to open them to the public next year. The fleet is about 30 vehicles, covering the city center, the airport, and selected nearby areas. About 1,500 people use it, with more than 10,000 on the waiting list. Rides can be ordered in the Verne or Uber app, and the price is locked at 1.99 euros (about $2.22). The company says thousands of commercial rides have an average rating of 4.8 out of 5.

Links:

Commentary:

"First in Europe" is the chief executive's description; what has happened is a press ride and an existing fleet of about 30 cars, with public driverless service aimed at next year.

10. Kakao: a Seoul robotaxi drives child-safety zones and a tunnel, with a manager still aboard (Autonomous driving / South Korea)

Summary:

Aju Press on October 17 described a 20- to 30-minute ride in a Kia EV6-based "Seoul Autonomous Vehicle" around Maebong Station in Gangnam. Kakao Mobility's AV-Kit uses three LiDAR units, five radars, and seven cameras, and a rear display shows a 3D view of the surroundings. Since August the operating area has included child-safety zones, where speed is capped at 80% of the limit, so a 30 km/h zone is driven at no more than 24 km/h. In the Maebong Tunnel, where GPS is weak, the safety manager did not take the wheel. The company has run a late-night service in Gangnam since March and expanded data collection to daytime in June, using edge cases to train the model. The car now combines an AI planner with a rule-based planner. Kakao plans to raise the share of the end-to-end model by year-end, with a rule-based safety evaluator still checking the final plan. If a passenger changes the destination mid-ride, autonomous driving stops and the manager intervenes.

Links:

Commentary:

This was an urban demonstration with a manager still in the seat; the child-zone speed cap and the tunnel passage can be checked, and driver-out Level 4 service is still being prepared.

11. Mercedes-Benz and NVIDIA extend their partnership toward urban assistance and future Level 4 (Autonomous driving / Germany)

Summary:

Mercedes-Benz Group announced on October 16 that it will extend its strategic partnership with NVIDIA to develop the next generation of driver assistance and automated driving. MB.OS handles new functions and over-the-air updates and works with NVIDIA Hyperion's in-vehicle computing and sensor architecture. The Alpamayo Stack supplies full-stack driving software with AI reasoning for point-to-point urban assistance, active safety, and automated parking. Halos adds a parallel safety stack. The companies say the technologies support advanced assistance and development of future SAE Level 4 uses, including robot limousines. The work also covers engineering simulation and Mercedes-Benz's MO360 digital production system. Board member and chief technology officer Jörg Burzer called NVIDIA Mercedes-Benz's most important strategic partner in automated driving.

Links:

Commentary:

The release describes next-generation assistance and preparation for Level 4, with no city opening date or fleet size.

IV. Cabins and Chips

12. Geely Holding: eligible overseas models will get Google built-in, with a first application planned for the second half of 2027 (Cabin / China)

Summary:

Geely Holding announced on October 16 a global partnership with Google to bring built-in Google Automotive Services to digital cockpits of eligible group-brand vehicles in overseas markets where Google services are available. The first application is planned for the second half of 2027 in markets outside China and the United States, subject to product, regulatory, and market readiness. Services at rollout include Gemini, Play, and Maps. The next wave covers passenger vehicles from Geely, Lynk & Co, Proton, Riddara, and smart. Senior vice president and chief technology officer Shen Yuan said the partnership puts digital services directly into the vehicles. Haris Ramic, Android for Cars product director at Google, said drivers will get familiar apps, navigation, and a personal AI assistant from the dashboard. The company said models, markets, and features will be announced as the rollout proceeds. Reuters carried the statement the same day.

Links:

Commentary:

The timetable is a second-half 2027 start outside China and the United States, not a configurator option this week.

13. Li Auto: chip subsidiary signs a RMB 1.625 billion round, with valuation up to RMB 17.1 billion if the extra option is fully used (Chips / China)

Summary:

Jiemian reported on October 17 that Li Auto said on October 16 its chip subsidiary, Shanghai Mahexin Technology, had signed a first equity financing agreement for RMB 1.625 billion. The round is led by Hangzhou Jingtao, BlueRun Ventures, and Huaye Tiancheng, with MiraclePlus participating. Hangzhou Jingtao and related funds received an additional subscription right of up to RMB 500 million; if it is fully exercised, post-money valuation reaches RMB 17.1 billion. A Zhitong Finance account of the filing splits the signed amount into RMB 1 billion from the controlling-shareholder side and RMB 625 million from outside investors. The extra right can be used once before December 31, 2026, at an implied price of RMB 23.35 per unit, for no more than RMB 500 million.

Links:

Commentary:

The signed amount is RMB 1.625 billion; the RMB 17.1 billion valuation depends on the extra RMB 500 million right being fully used before year-end.

Today's Summary

  • Products: The ID. UNYX 07 Lite is promoted at 99,900 yuan, and both updated models add LiDAR and a 77.5 kWh battery. BMW lifted the iX5 EPA range estimate to 450 miles, with certification still pending. Tesla's Malaysia outlet adapter is rated 230V at 13A.
  • Markets and governance: September NEV penetration was 67%, and gasoline cars fell below one-third of sales for the first time. • Cabins and chips: Geely said on Friday that overseas models will get Google built-in, with a first application planned for the second half of 2027. Li Auto's chip subsidiary signed RMB 1.625 billion, and full use of the extra right would value it at up to RMB 17.1 billion.

Daily Framing:

October 17 was a day of price cuts and driverless trials: Volkswagen pushed a China-market electric promotional price below 100,000 yuan and said selected Chinese models are being prepared for Europe; London drivers protested robotaxis that still carry a safety driver, while Zagreb began rides with no operator aboard; Changan's leadership change and Li Auto's chip financing put governance and in-house compute on the same page.
