2. XRISM: stellar wind seen falling onto a pulsar at about 540,000 km/h (High-energy astrophysics)

Summary:

NASA said on September 18 that the Japan-led X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM), using the jointly built Resolve spectrometer, directly observed stellar wind from the blue hypergiant Wray 977 being captured by the neutron-star pulsar GX 301-2 in the high-mass X-ray binary BP Crucis, about 13,000 light-years away. The star is about 40 times the Sun's mass and 60 times its size; the pulsar packs more than a solar mass into a ball about 20 kilometers across, rotates about once every 11 minutes, and orbits every 41.5 days. During roughly 16 hours on February 1, 2025, near the end of a strong flare, redshifted absorption lines from highly ionized iron showed gas racing toward the pulsar at about 335,000 mph (about 540,000 km/h). The paper appeared the same day in Science Advances. Roi Rahin of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and NASA Goddard said clear signs of wind plasma falling onto a compact object had not been seen before.

3. Yale: outer-Solar-System planetesimals were already 83%–92% chondrules in the first million years (Planetary science)

Summary:

A Yale-led team with first author Damanveer Grewal reported in Nature Astronomy on September 18 that parent bodies of outer-Solar-System iron meteorites were already sorting for heat-forged chondrules over icy, volatile-rich matrix within about the first million years after the Solar System began to form. Two independent chemical tracers imply only 8%–17% matrix—about 83%–92% chondrules—lower than in any known chondrite. Earlier evidence of this sorting reached only objects that formed 2 to 4 million years after the Solar System's origin. 4. FDA fully approves Inluriyo plus Verzenio: 11.1 vs 5.5 months median progression-free survival in ESR1-mutated breast cancer (Oncology)

Summary:

Eli Lilly announced on September 18 that the U.S. FDA granted full approval to the oral estrogen-receptor antagonist imlunestrant (Inluriyo) plus the CDK4/6 inhibitor abemaciclib (Verzenio) for adults with ER-positive, HER2-negative, ESR1-mutated locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, as detected by an FDA-authorized test, after progression on at least one line of endocrine therapy. 5. Nature news: first mutation-matched antisense oligonucleotide, and a man with rare motor-neuron disease still practicing a year later (Neurology)

Summary:

Nature reported on September 18 that a man with a slowly progressing form of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, caused by a rare mutation that leads to protein buildup, became the first person to receive an antisense oligonucleotide designed for his specific mutation. Between April 2024 and April 2025 he received three 50-milligram intrathecal doses followed by three 75-milligram doses, with no serious adverse effects and no sign of cognitive decline. Scores on a test of motor skills, breathing, and neurological function improved, other breathing and cognition scores stayed stable, and he was still working as a physician a year later. A Mayo Clinic Jacksonville co-author said sustained improvement without treatment is rare in this disease. The news said the results were published in Med this week. 6. Joslin and Harvard: m6A holds pancreatic alpha-cell identity; its loss pushes cells toward immature beta-like states (Metabolism)

Summary:

A team led by Rohit N. Kulkarni at Joslin Diabetes Center and Harvard Medical School reported in Nature Metabolism on September 18 that N6-methyladenosine (m6A) on mRNA regulates pancreatic alpha-cell function and plasticity. Metabolic cues that stimulate glucagon secretion, such as L-arginine, raise METTL3, METTL14, and m6A; loss of m6A impairs amino-acid-stimulated glucagon secretion and disrupts alpha-cell identity programs. In mice, alpha-cell-specific deletion of Mettl14 reduces alpha-cell mass, increases beta-cell mass, and promotes alpha-to-beta conversion, with late beta-like states that are incompletely mature. m6A-eCLIP identifies the transcription factor Yy1 as a direct m6A-sensitive target.

Whether alpha cells can be rewritten as beta cells now has an RNA-methylation switch, but the late beta-like states in the paper are still immature—short of a functional substitute for insulin.

7. India Meteorological Department: extreme-heat area in central and northwest India grew 20%–40% per decade, 1971–2022 (Climate extremes)

Scientists at the India Meteorological Department, the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, and Atria University in Bengaluru combined seven hazards—including daytime heat, humid heat, heatwave severity, and drought—into a revised India Climate Extremes Index for 1971–2022, with trends tested by the Mann-Kendall method. 8. Washington State University: human nitrogen exceeds all natural sources along about a quarter of coasts (Marine biogeochemistry)

Summary:

John Harrison of Washington State University and colleagues published on September 17 in Global Biogeochemical Cycles a global inventory of coastal nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon, comparing pre-industrial and modern inputs. Marine sources such as net upwelling and onwelling still exceed land inputs in the global total, but land-based nutrients already exceed marine sources along roughly half the world's coastline. In about 25% of coastal segments, human activities add more nitrogen than all natural sources combined; the corresponding share for phosphorus is about 11%. Human nitrogen also dominates in about a fifth of large marine ecosystems. The human imprint is larger for nitrogen than for phosphorus, shifting nutrient balance toward phosphorus limitation, and nitrogen and phosphorus loads have risen more than silicon, increasing ICEP, an indicator of harmful-algal-bloom likelihood.

9. Boston Children's and the Broad: prime assembly integrates medium-to-large DNA in non-dividing cells (Genome engineering)

Daniel E. Bauer and colleagues at Boston Children's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the Broad Institute reported prime assembly in Nature on September 16. The method uses CRISPR-targeted dual-flap synthesis to assemble and integrate single- or double-stranded DNA fragments at RNA-programmed sites in human cells. 10. Cambridge and UCL: reciprocal excitation between V1 and a higher visual area erases inconsistent activity faster (Neuroscience)
