1. ESA/JAXA BepiColombo separates Mercury Transfer Module, starting arrival sequence (Space)

On the morning of Sept. 3, 2026 (ET), the joint ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission completed a key milestone: the Mercury Transfer Module (MTM) separated from the stacked pair of science orbiters. ESA mission control acquired a confirming signal around 9:53 a.m. ET and reported the spacecraft healthy and operating as expected. Launched in October 2018 after an ~8-year cruise of more than 10 billion kilometers, the orbiters are scheduled to enter Mercury orbit on Nov. 21, separate from each other in December, and begin science operations in April 2027. Getting to Mercury is hard; arriving is harder—separation is only the first shot in a half-year of intense ops that will finally put two orbiters on the planet’s magnetic and crustal puzzles.

2. Quantum phase of free fall measured directly, consistent with Einstein’s equivalence principle (Quantum gravity)

Summary:

An international team from Ben-Gurion University, the University of Ulm, and the University of Oxford (including Nobel laureate Sir Roger Penrose) reports in Science Advances (Sept. 2; DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aec8045) the first direct measurement of the predicted quantum phase of a freely falling object. Using a chip-scale “Quantum Galileo Interferometer,” they split ultracold rubidium atom waves into a free-falling path and a held path, then recombined them; the measured phase matched the value predicted by applying Einstein’s equivalence principle to a quantum object (coverage cites ~2.5% experimental uncertainty). The authors stress the result does not unify quantum mechanics with gravity or show that gravity itself is quantum—it shows the equivalence principle remains consistent in the regime tested.

3. HHMI Janelia and Google release complete male fruit-fly CNS connectome (Neuroscience)

Summary:

On Sept. 3, HHMI’s Janelia Research Campus, Google Research, the University of Cambridge, and collaborators presented the first complete connectome of an adult male fruit fly’s brain and ventral nerve cord: about 166,691 neurons and 11,691 cell types, fully proofread and annotated including fruitless/doublesex expression. 4. University of Tokyo: electron spin steers hydrogen adsorption and abstraction on magnetic nickel (Surface chemistry)

6. In-body CAR-T generation eases multiple sclerosis in small trial (Immunotherapy)

Summary:

Nature news reports a proof-of-concept trial led by researchers including a team linked to Huazhong University of Science and Technology / Tongji Medical College, published this week in The New England Journal of Medicine (Cheng et al., N. Engl. J. Med. 395, 926–929, 2026): a modified virus delivered genetic instructions for chimeric antigen receptors so patients’ T cells made CAR-T cells inside the body targeting autoantibody-bearing B cells. Sixteen people with multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune conditions received a single intravenous dose and were followed for about six months; CAR-T cells expanded, B cells and autoantibodies fell, and replacement B cells did not produce the same autoantibodies. MS participants showed better motor and cognitive function and less fatigue; those with muscle-affecting disease improved strength scores and inflammation. Commentators call in vivo CAR-T cheaper and faster than ex vivo manufacturing but say larger trials are still required.

7. AbbVie’s BCMA×CD3 bispecific etentamig hits dual Phase 3 endpoints in CERVINO (Hematologic oncology)

On Sept. 3, AbbVie announced positive topline results from the global Phase 3 CERVINO study (NCT06158841) of etentamig, an investigational BCMA×CD3 bispecific T-cell engager, versus standard available therapies in triple-class-exposed relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. 8. Sino Biopharm’s GPC3 ADC TQB6426 clears FDA IND (Oncology)

Summary:

China biopharmaceutical company Sino Biopharmaceutical announced on Sept. 3 that its subsidiary Chia Tai Tianqing’s Class 1 innovative drug TQB6426, a GPC3-targeted antibody–drug conjugate, received U.S. FDA investigational new drug (IND) clearance for advanced malignancies. 9. UNEP: overshoot of 1.5°C now hard to avoid; charts “overshoot–peak–decline” path (Climate)

10. China issues national ETS allowance plans for power, steel, cement, and aluminum (Carbon market)

11. Hebei team’s steric-gated dual-site chelation yields 27.39% inverted perovskite cell (Photovoltaics)
