2. Webb Detects Dust and Water Near the Milky Way’s Central Black Hole (Astronomy)

Summary:

ESA reported on August 11 that an international team used JWST’s MIRI to obtain the most detailed continuous mid-infrared spectrum yet of evolved star IRS 3, only about 0.55 light-years from Sagittarius A*. The spectrum shows oxygen-rich silicate dust and, for the first time for this object, clear water signatures in its envelope; modeling indicates a layered shell extending roughly 10,000 AU with temperatures from about 1200 K inward to about 100 K outward. Stellar modeling suggests roughly six solar masses and an age of about 72 million years, implying dust and molecules can still form and survive in the galactic center’s harsh radiation field. 3. DESI Legacy Surveys Release the Largest 2D Color Map of the Universe (Astronomy)

Summary:

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, NSF NOIRLab, and collaborators released around August 10–11 the latest DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys 2D color sky map: about 5.6 trillion pixels covering nearly 4 billion objects (mostly stars and galaxies) across roughly 75% of the sky in visible and near-infrared light. Built over about 13 years from more than 263,000 telescope frames, the map is public via the Legacy Survey Sky Viewer and has guided DESI target selection since June 2026. 4. Biosyngen’s EBV-Specific CAR-T BRG01 Cleared by FDA for Pivotal Phase II (Biomedicine)

On August 11, Biosyngen said the U.S. FDA approved pivotal Phase II trials of BRG01, an EBV-specific CAR-T therapy for relapsed/metastatic EBV-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma. China’s NMPA/CDE had already cleared a pivotal Phase II, making BRG01 the first cell therapy to enter Phase II for this indication in both the U.S. and China. 5. Luzhu’s LZ901 Shingles Vaccine Phase III Results Published in Nature Communications (Vaccines)

Beijing Luzhu Biotechnology reported that Phase III results for recombinant herpes zoster vaccine LZ901 appeared in Nature Communications on August 7, with industry and Chinese-language coverage continuing through August 9–11. 7. Late Paleozoic Icehouse Extreme Warming Event Offers a Geological Analogue (Paleoclimate)
