October 8, 2026 · Gaming & Entertainment Daily Digest

A roundup of gaming and entertainment developments for October 8, 2026, with summaries, links, and commentary.

I. Studios and Products

1. Xbox Forms the XP Division for Film, Merchandise, and Live Experiences (Studio)

Summary:

Xbox Wire published on October 8 a note from CEO Asha to employees worldwide and a companion post from chief strategy officer Matthew Ball. Kayleen Walters moves from president of Mojang to president of the new XP division, and Maria Angelidou-Smith becomes CEO of Mojang and Minecraft. Both report to Asha. Angelidou-Smith starts Monday, October 19. XP, short for experience points, formalizes four areas: Xbox Pictures for film, television, and other linear storytelling; Xbox Products for licensing and merchandise; Xbox Partnerships for sponsors and brand partners; and Xbox Places for broadcasts, in-person events, theme parks, and other location-based experiences. Ball wrote that under Walters, Minecraft grew from an already record 350 million units sold to more than 425 million, and that its merchandise business became one of the top 20 globally. He also wrote that A Minecraft Movie had the biggest opening weekend ever for a video game adaptation and finished number one at the domestic box office. Asha's note called that film the biggest in the United States last year and a top-five release worldwide, said Walters is a producer on the sequel, and said she grew consumer products into a multibillion-dollar business with more than 250 licensees. Angelidou-Smith spent nearly a decade at Meta, where she led Facebook Groups used by more than 1.8 billion people a month, later led product and technology at Personio, and served as chief product officer at Reddit.

Commentary:

What was published today is the division's scope and two appointments, with no new slate, budget, or release date.

2. Paramount Is Developing a Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Film (Adaptation)

Summary:

Deadline reported exclusively on October 8 that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the universe of CD Projekt Red's role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077. Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce alongside CD Projekt Red, the rights holder. Deadline wrote that the base game has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and that the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million. No writer, director, cast, or release date was announced. Paramount's other game films include a Street Fighter adaptation co-produced with Legendary that opens October 16, and a Call of Duty film directed by Peter Berg, who is co-writing with Taylor Sheridan. Variety confirmed the same project and the same two sales figures the same day.

Commentary:

What can be checked today is the producing arrangement and two sales figures; the creative team is still unnamed.

3. Hellraiser: Revival Launches Today, Standard Edition at $39.99 (Release)

Summary:

Saber Interactive announced on October 8 that the survival-horror game Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is available now on Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The Standard Edition is $39.99 digitally and at major retailers. The Deluxe Edition is digital-only at $49.99 and includes the Nailer melee weapon, a Cenobite shotgun skin, a Punisher baseball-bat skin, a Leviathan weapon charm, a 1980s horror-movie filter, a digital art book, the digital novella Bleeding Hearts, and the digital soundtrack. The release says Doug Bradley returns as the voice of Pinhead, and it quotes Clive Barker calling the work with Saber an extraordinary experience. A free Steam demo is playable now.

Commentary:

Today's release locks platforms, prices, and Pinhead's returning voice; no first-day sales figure was given.

4. Time-Loop Game Echo Weaver Launches, Day One on Xbox Game Pass (Release)

Summary:

Akupara Games and Moonlight Kids announced on October 8 that the time-loop metroidvania Echo Weaver is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Game Pass, Switch 2, and PC. The same day, Akupara head of publishing Buddy Sola wrote on Xbox Wire that the game is out on Xbox Series X|S and PC and is a day-one Game Pass title. Moonlight Kids is a three-person team spread across Portland, Atlanta, and Spokane; its previous game was 2021's Wild at Heart. The design is knowledge-gated: the player is stuck in the colony of Provenance with only minutes to live each cycle, and a reset is not a random run. Neither the press release nor the Xbox post listed a price.

Commentary:

What was confirmed today is the platform list and Game Pass; a price is not in either announcement.

Summary:

VGC reported on October 8 that Richard Garriott told Jesse Petrilla he will reclaim the copyright to the RPG and MMO series Ultima from Electronic Arts under Section 203 of the U.S. Copyright Act, which lets authors terminate a transfer after 35 years. He sold Origin, and the series with it, to EA in 1992 for $30 million. He gave notice in April of this year, and EA wrote back that it knows the law and will act accordingly. Garriott said the two sides are in active talks about whether any Ultima projects can be made together, and that the rights return officially in 2027. At minimum, he said, he could re-release the earlier games or make sequels. VGC noted that the last mainline entry was 1999's Ultima IX, and that EA's most recent free-to-play revival attempt was 2013's Ultima Forever.

Commentary:

What is on the record today is the notice and a 2027 reversion date, not a greenlit new game.

6. Neon Abyss 2 Launches Across Platforms, Steam China Launch Price 46.40 Yuan (Release)

Summary:

IT Home reported on October 8 that the action roguelike Neon Abyss 2, developed by Veewo Games and published with Kepler Ghost, launched the same day on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, the Microsoft Store, and Nintendo Switch. IT Home said this is the series' first release on PS5 and Switch, that it joins Xbox Game Pass at launch, and that Chinese is supported. A mobile version opened a public test on TapTap the same day as a free download with a paid unlock, with content updates kept in step with PC. IT Home listed a Steam China list price of 58 yuan and a launch discount of 46.40 yuan, plus an 88.80 yuan deluxe bundle and a 54.81 yuan Neon Abyss 1+2 bundle. The game supports up to four players online. Veewo's site the same day says the game is on sale, and that page does not repeat the China prices.

Commentary:

The China prices come from IT Home's same-day report; the official site confirms that the multiplatform release is live.

II. Regulation, Streaming, and Regions

7. Italy's Antitrust Authority Says It Is Leading a Microsoft In-Game Purchase Review (Regulation)

Summary:

Italy's competition authority, the AGCM, issued a press release in Rome on October 8. Within the EU Consumer Protection Cooperation Network, the action it leads with the consumer authorities of Norway and Denmark is aimed at Activision Blizzard UK Limited and other Microsoft group companies. The question is whether there has been a "widespread infringement" under Regulation (EU) 2017/2394, meaning conduct contrary to EU consumer rules that is likely to harm consumers in three or more member states. The release says the European Commission announced the wider coordinated actions on September 30, covering ten companies: Activision Blizzard UK, Crytek, InnoGames, King.com, Mojang, Plarium Europe, PLR Worldwide Sales, Riot Games, Supercell, and Ubisoft EMEA. Italy's action widens investigations the authority opened nationally last December into Diablo Immortal and Call of Duty. The stated concerns are virtual currencies such as platinum, globes, or diamonds, currency sold in bundles, dark patterns, weak parental controls, and a lack of help when accounts are blocked. Euronews the same day identified the Call of Duty title as Call of Duty Mobile; the authority's text says Call of Duty.

Commentary:

Today's document is the lead-authority explanation and the list of concerns; the Commission announcement is dated September 30, and the release contains no fine.

8. Crunchyroll Takes The Apothecary Diaries Film Outside Asia (Streaming)

Summary:

Anime News Network reported on October 8 that Crunchyroll said on Thursday it has acquired North American and worldwide rights, excluding Asia but including India, to the anime film The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure. The film opens in Japan on December 11 with a new story by original author Hyuganatsu. Mariya Ise joins the cast as Mu Qing; ANN said the English romanization is not confirmed. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment will announce the release date outside that Japanese opening later. ANN also noted that season 3 of the television anime premiered on October 2 in Nippon TV's Friday Anime Night block and on 29 affiliated stations, with the second cours set for April 2027.

Links:

Commentary:

Today's announcement fixes the Japanese opening and the rights territory; Crunchyroll's own release date is still pending.

9. Apple TV Acquires Australian Miniseries Dustfall for a 2027 Global Premiere (Streaming)

Summary:

AppleInsider reported on October 8 that Apple TV has acquired Dustfall, a six-part Australian crime miniseries from ABC. Anna Torv stars. Dianne Taylor wrote the series from Vikki Petraitis's novel The Unbelieved. Soapbox Pictures and Moonriver produced it in association with the BBC, ZDF, and Screen Australia. It premieres on ABC on October 11, 2026, with all six episodes on ABC iview that day. Apple said it will premiere the show in 2027 worldwide, excluding Australia. AppleInsider wrote that Apple bought it from distributor Federation International rather than directly from those producers, and that this follows the September 2026 purchase of the already aired BBC comedy Small Prophets. 9to5Mac the same day also described Dustfall as Apple TV's second move away from an originals-only catalog and placed its arrival in 2027.

Links:

Commentary:

What is fixed today is the episode count, the Australian premiere, and a 2027 worldwide window; no month inside 2027 was given.

10. Bloomberry Launches OnlyFun.PH, Combining Gaming and Livestreams (Region)

Summary:

Inside Asian Gaming reported on October 8 that Bloomberry Resorts, operator of Solaire in Manila, launched OnlyFun.PH that day. The company described it as the Philippines' first regulated interactive entertainment platform combining online gaming, livestreaming, and creator-led content, and as part of its mass-market FUNaloMAX platform. Users can watch shows hosted by digital personalities, interact with hosts and other content, and use gaming features in the same place. Bloomberry said the service runs under a PAGCOR license and uses KYC, data-security measures, and built-in player controls. Kelvin Kuan, vice president and head of online gaming, said the launch responds to demand for interactive, creator-driven media. BusinessWorld reported the same day that the company did not disclose the platform's investment cost or a revenue target of its own. IAG separately quoted president and COO Greg Hawkins's earlier remark that he wants online platforms to contribute 20 percent of group-wide gross gaming revenue by the end of 2027; that figure was not presented as a new target for OnlyFun.PH alone.

Links:

Commentary:

What launched today is a licensed product format; the spend and a platform-specific revenue target were not disclosed.

III. Esports and Indie Releases

11. Champions Shanghai Upper Bracket: G2 Sweeps 100 Thieves, Vitality Eliminates Nongshim in Overtime (Esports)

Summary:

G2 moves to the upper semifinals and 100 Thieves drops to the lower bracket. The head-to-head is now 6-4 in G2's favor. The grand final is scheduled for October 18 at Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai. In the other upper-quarterfinal, Vitality faced Nongshim RedForce. Vitality won Split 13-6, Nongshim won Abyss 13-4, and Vitality took the series after Haven went to overtime. That report did not give Haven's final round score.

Links:

Commentary:

Today's copy fixes the winners and the published map scores; Haven's overtime tally is not in that report.

12. Triple-i Fall Showcase: Outward 2 Early Access Dated February 8, 2027 (Release)

Summary:

Polygon recapped on October 8 the Triple-i Initiative fall showcase held that day. An IGN trailer post the same day said Nine Dots Studio's Outward 2 enters early access on February 8, 2027 for PC on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. The developers described it as the ultimate simulation of an adventurer's life. Polygon reported that Among Us Story: On Guard launches on February 17, 2027 for mobile, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and Windows PC, as a narrative adventure about solving murders and finding the impostors on a spaceship. Polygon also said many demos went live during the show; titles that were not checked against a second source are left out here.

Links:

Commentary:

The dates locked today are Outward 2's early access and the new Among Us release; the rest of the demo list was not rechecked item by item.

Today's Summary

  • Xbox folded film, merchandise, partnerships, and live experiences into XP, and Mojang's new CEO starts on October 19.
  • Paramount and CD Projekt Red are developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film, with reported sales of more than 40 million copies for the base game and 15 million for Phantom Liberty.
  • Hellraiser: Revival, Echo Weaver, and Neon Abyss 2 all went on sale the same day, while Italy's antitrust authority published its account of an EU review of Microsoft in-game spending.
  • In the Champions Shanghai upper quarterfinals, G2 eliminated 100 Thieves 2-0 and Vitality eliminated Nongshim after overtime.

Daily Framing:

October 8 was an adaptation-and-launch day in the games and entertainment cycle: a platform holder split non-game experiences into their own division, film deals and an old-series copyright claim landed together, and new releases shared the date with an EU consumer review.
