A roundup of gaming and entertainment developments for October 3, 2026, with summaries, links, and commentary.

I. Studios and Flagship Releases

1. Capcom's REX Project Upgrades RE Engine in Stages, With a Goal of Making Games Together With AI (Engine)

Summary:

IGN updated its report on October 3: at the Capcom Open Conference RE:2026 on October 2, programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the REX project, framed as evolving RE Engine for the next generation. He named three pressures: games are now so large that simple processes take extreme amounts of time, a bigger staff needs an engine more people can use, and "successfully integrating AI technology into development workflows has become an essential condition for streamlining future development." GameBiz's account says Capcom will not rewrite the engine from scratch and will add improvements to the current RE Engine in stages. At least some components will be open-sourced so they can be used to train AI. The system is unified under what the report calls the world's most common programming language, so both people and AI can read it. Capcom describes the long-term target as an "AI-generation game engine" and a future in which it "creates games together with AI." The same report quotes the company's March 2026 shareholders meeting: Capcom will not put AI-generated assets into its games, but it plans to use AI to improve development efficiency, including in graphics, sound, and programming.

Commentary:

The public line is still workflow and testing, not generative assets inside Resident Evil; the phrase "make games together with AI" leaves that line wider than the asset ban.

2. Atlus Releases the Persona 4 Revival Shadow Trailer (New Game)

Summary:

Gematsu and RPG Site both reported on October 3 that Atlus released a Shadow trailer for Persona 4 Revival, in English and Japanese. The video description says a string of unusual murders disturbs the town of Inaba as word of the Midnight Channel spreads, and the protagonist and his classmates face Shadows, described as manifestations of one's other self, then awaken Personas and look for the truth inside the fog. The game is set for February 18, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, and for May 20, 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. Gematsu also says it will be available via Game Pass; the report does not name a tier.

Links:

Commentary:

After the character trailers, the public material moves to Shadows, the Midnight Channel, and the release dates, while the Game Pass tier is still unstated.

3. ARC Raiders Is Free to Play October 8–12 on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation (Live Service)

Summary:

Embark Studios announced on its site on October 2 that ARC Raiders will be free to play from 09:00 UTC on October 8, 2026, to 08:00 UTC on October 12, on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation, with access to the full game. The window coincides with Frozen Trail, which Embark calls its biggest update since launch. New players can enter the new map, Pendola Pass, immediately if they squad with someone who has already unlocked it. Polygon followed on October 3 and converted the same window to 5 a.m. ET on October 8 through 4 a.m. ET on October 12. That report says the update adds a new map, a battle pass, a frigate patrol vessel, new enemies and challenges, weapon mods, a camera gadget, and weapon skins.

Links:

Commentary:

Four days of the full game open onto the largest update, and the new map is available to free players by queueing with someone who already unlocked it.

4. Dan Houser Describes Two Absurd Ventures Games and Says He Is Avoiding the GTA 6 Reveal (Studio)

Summary:

Variety published an interview on October 2 with Rockstar co-founder and former head writer Dan Houser; GamesRadar+ and Polygon followed on October 3. Houser left Rockstar in 2020 and formally launched Absurd Ventures in 2023. He is writing with former colleague Jeffrey "Lazlow" Jones. He described two untitled games: an open-world comedy built around comedy and character memory, with more information promised in the next few months, and a dystopian science-fiction game about development gone wrong and a rogue AI that discovers sentience. Because two people who disliked each other made it, Houser said, it does not like itself. The company is rolling out three worlds, A Better Paradise, American Caper, and the Absurdaverse, across comics, fiction podcasts, books, animation, and the planned games. On the extended GTA 6 gameplay look Netflix released in August, Houser told Variety he has not seen it and will try to avoid it, because that kind of material distracts him creatively. He also said he does not play many open-world games now.

Links:

Commentary:

Six years after leaving Rockstar, he gives the genres of two games and says in public that he is not watching GTA 6 gameplay.

5. Players Report Repeated Console Errors in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered (Reception)

Summary:

Gamersky's October 3 roundup of player posts says The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered launched on September 29 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, with a free upgrade for owners of the original. Forum reports focus on console errors. Screenshots show the PS5 code CE-108255-1, dated from September 30 through October 3. The original poster says some side-quest bosses trigger repeated errors, naming Renard and a vampire boss and suspecting those are not the only cases. Other players say cave contracts are likely to crash the game, after which they must relaunch and watch the cutscene again. Some players say they played for several days without an error. The report says CDPR has not issued a dedicated statement on this crash.

Links:

Commentary:

Five days after the free upgrade went live, the public record is still player-posted error codes, without a matching official note.

II. China Shows and Indie Games

6. Tides of Annihilation Opens a Greater Bay Area Demo at the Guangzhou Show (Expo)

Summary:

Southern Finance reported on October 3 that the 2026 AGF x CICF Guangzhou anime and games festival opened in Guangzhou on October 2. Tides of Annihilation, a knight-fantasy action-adventure developed and published by Eclipse Glow Games (日蚀边缘), offered its first hands-on demo in the Greater Bay Area. The game uses Arthurian myth and moves the story through exploration and combat in a world that mixes the real and the imagined. Co-CEO and producer Chen Qi said the team wanted to retell a Western classic from a Chinese developer's point of view, visited historic sites in Britain early in development, and spoke with local scholars and players. The report says the game is the first title from a Chinese team to win The Most Epic Game award at gamescom 2026. Chen said the Cologne booth was among the longest queues on the floor, with some players waiting about six hours.

Links:

Commentary:

The Cologne award and the six-hour queue are now attached to a Bay Area demo, and no release date is in the report.

7. Ubisoft Brings the First China Demo of Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake to CICF (Expo)

Summary:

Gamersky reported on October 3 that Ubisoft is at CICF in the Poly World Trade Expo Center in Guangzhou from October 3 through October 5, at booth 4C02. The booth offers the first hands-on in China of Heroes of Might and Magic III Remake and a playable demo of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Resynced. Visitors can collect a limited commemorative ticket stub. The report says the play and demo areas were full, with large visual walls for both games and several cosplayers in Assassin's Creed outfits. Ubisoft's official Weibo account said the booth was overwhelmed by the turnout and asked players to come with friends. The event runs through October 5.

Links:

Commentary:

Two remakes share one booth for a domestic hands-on, and the report covers crowds and stubs rather than a new release date.

8. ICEY Sequel Crowdfunding Passes 20 Million Yuan, and the Producer Says Merch May Ship Late (Indie)

Summary:

Gamersky reported on October 3 that, on the tenth anniversary of the Chinese side-scrolling action game ICEY (艾希), developer 幻刃网络 announced the sequel 艾希:续 and opened crowdfunding on Modian on October 1. The original goal was 10,000 yuan. By the evening of October 3 the total had reached 20 million yuan, close to 2,000 times the goal, with more than 140,000 backers. The report says the sequel is planned for PC on May 1, 2027, with a mobile version about a year after the PC release and console versions still waiting on development conditions. A second report the same day says producer "Lao Mark Xiao" posted that morning that the campaign is far above expectations, merchandise may not all ship in the original window, and the shipping cycle may be extended. The team will discuss where and how many new CG scenes to add and plans to look for people to make them after the holiday. A costume-change feature is not guaranteed. He also said skepticism at this funding level is normal and the team did not expect this much support.

Links:

Commentary:

A 10,000-yuan goal was beaten by about 2,000 times, the public PC date is still May 1, 2027, and merchandise shipping is the part now described as likely to slip.

III. Regulation and Streaming

9. Casey Bloys Says Paramount+ and HBO Max May Bundle First After the Merger (Streaming)

Summary:

Media Play News reported on October 3 that the roughly $110.8 billion equity merger of Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery is expected to close on October 6, with the combined company named Skydance. Casey Bloys, currently CEO of HBO and HBO Max, said at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles this week that he will run streaming for the new company. He said a discounted bundle of Max and Paramount+, similar to the current Max and Disney+ offer, "would make a lot of sense," and that nothing has been announced. The report says the two services together have more than 220 million paid subscribers. Antenna data cited in the piece puts about 7.6 million U.S. subscribers, 14% of the combined platforms, on both services. The firm says the Max–Disney+ bundle has an 80% three-month retention rate, above each app alone and above the 74% rate it cites for Netflix. Morgan Stanley projects the joint base will top 240 million global users by 2030. The report also says Netflix has more than 325 million subscribers worldwide. Bloys said the streaming bubble greenlit large numbers of shows without sustainable monetization, that the downside is painful, and that he hopes mergers leave the business with a calmer rhythm.

Links:

Commentary:

Three days before closing, the streaming chief calls a bundle the likely first step and says it has not been announced.

10. India's First Final GST Orders Sharply Cut Demands on Real-Money Gaming Firms (Regulation)

Summary:

Business Today reported on October 3 that Sanjit Bangar, founder of tax service Tax Buddy, said some online real-money gaming companies have received the first final GST orders, with sharply lower demands and no personal penalties on directors in the cases covered so far. On his account, the GST demand on Delta Corp fell from about 16,000 crore rupees to 117 crore rupees (about 160 billion rupees to 1.17 billion rupees), and the demand on Pacific Gaming fell from 721 crore rupees to 100.8 crore rupees (about 7.21 billion rupees to 1.008 billion rupees). The backdrop is India's 28% GST on online money gaming from October 1, 2023, charged on the face value of bets rather than on platform revenue. The report says final orders for Dream11 and Gameskraft are expected by October 14, 2026. These figures come from Bangar's public account, not from a tax-department release that day.

Links:

Commentary:

Historical face-value demands were cut to a fraction at the first two companies, while the larger Dream11 and Gameskraft orders are still ahead.

11. European Game Groups Answer the Virtual-Currency Probe With Smaller Packs and a 48-Hour Refund (Regulation)

Summary:

EU Perspectives reported on October 3 that Video Games Europe and the European Game Developers Federation responded on Wednesday to the EU Consumer Protection Cooperation Network's coordinated action on in-game virtual currency. The groups reject treating that currency as bitcoin or cryptocurrency, and they warn that extensive redesigns could make some games uneconomic to offer in Europe, especially for smaller studios. Their proposals include tailored top-ups or smaller currency bundles, indicative real-money prices, and conditional refunds within 48 hours for bundles that are wholly unused. Federation managing director Jari-Pekka Kaleva said in a Thursday commentary that it was unfortunate the CPC network was not ready to develop the industry proposals further. Lawyer Andreas Lober wrote the same day that the network says it is applying existing law but appears to be extending it, potentially beyond permissible limits. The report says regulators consider earlier talks insufficient, have opened discussions with the individual companies, and may see national enforcement if concerns remain. Games named in the piece include Minecraft, Candy Crush Saga, Clash of Clans, and Valorant.

Links:

Commentary:

The industry answer to price labels and withdrawal rights is smaller packs and a 48-hour refund on unused currency, and the open question is whether national authorities enforce.

IV. Esports

12. VALORANT Champions Shanghai: G2 and Nongshim Advance, All Four Chinese Teams Are Out (Esports)

Summary:

esports.gg updated the group deciders on October 3. G2 Esports beat Team Liquid 2-0, 13-10 on Split and 13-7 on Abyss, for the last playoff spot in Group C. Nongshim RedForce beat Karmine Corp 2-1: KC won Sunset 13-9, then lost Summit 5-13 and Haven 6-13, so NS took the Group D spot. A same-day report confirms all four VCT CN teams are eliminated: EDward Gaming, JD Gaming, TYLOO, and XLG Esports all lost their opening matches 0-2. In elimination matches, JDG won Abyss 13-3 against T1 and TYLOO won Summit 13-7, but both lost their series. EDG was swept by Global Esports, and XLG was swept by Nongshim RedForce. NRG, the defending champion, plus 100 Thieves, Team Vitality, and Paper Rex have already qualified. October 4 still has FUT Esports versus T1 and LOUD versus Global Esports. The eight-team double-elimination playoffs start on October 7.

Links:

Commentary:

The home Champions event lost every Chinese team in groups, and today's two playoff tickets went to G2 and Nongshim.

13. Faker Tells the Asian Games Gold Press Conference That Retirement Depends on Passion (Esports)

Summary:

The Korea Herald reported on October 3 that South Korea's League of Legends team held a gold-medalists press conference that day at Korea House in Nagoya. The players were Kim Geon-woo, Kim Geon-bu, Choi Woo-je, Lee Min-hyeong, and Lee Sang-hyeok (Faker). On Friday, South Korea beat Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the final at Aichi Sky Expo in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, taking a second consecutive Asian Games gold in the event after Hangzhou in 2022. Lee, 30, said another Asian Games gold was meaningful and that he was glad to bring joy to fans. Asked how long he can keep playing, he said he does not think age has much to do with retirement, that how long you can sustain your passion decides when you retire, and that he can keep going longer.

Links:

Commentary:

The final score is Friday's news; what Saturday adds is that he does not treat age 30 as the retirement point.

14. The Demacia Cup Global Invitational Opens, and All Three LCK Teams Win Round One (Esports)

Summary:

Inven Global reported on October 3 that the 2026 Demacia Cup Global Invitational opened that day. All three LCK teams won their round-one matches and moved into the round-two winners' bracket: KT Rolster beat Shopify Rebellion, BNK FearX beat Team Vitality, and HANJIN BRION came back to beat JD Gaming. Round two is KT versus RED Canids Kalunga, HANJIN BRION versus Team WE, and BNK FearX versus LGD Gaming. The losers' bracket is Natus Vincere versus FlyQuest, GAM Esports versus Team Vitality, and Shopify Rebellion versus JD Gaming. Winners'-bracket round two starts at 16:00 KST on October 4; teams that reach two wins advance to the knockout stage, and losers drop to round three. Losers'-bracket round two starts at 16:00 KST on October 5.

Links:

Commentary:

The invitational's first day left all three LCK teams in the winners' bracket, with the next round set for the afternoon of October 4.
